whats the correct way to park in a residential area? OK this is isn't london, where its every man for himself.. but should I expect people to park opposite my car during the day, effectively making the, already narrow, road, very narrow indeed?

Is there a highway code rule to suggest you shouldnt park opposite existing cars?

My theory is that fire engines should be able to get through?

There is a handicapped day care centre on my housing estate, directly opposite my house, which all the staff park along.

Rule 217: DO NOT park your vehicle or trailer on the road where it would endanger, inconvenience or obstruct pedestrians or other road users. For example, do not stop
near a school entrance
anywhere you would prevent access for Emergency Services

You can certainly argue on the fire engine theme. We stopped a famous footballer demolishing a large house behind our's and building 3 smaller ones with an access road because the access road wasn't wide enough for a fire engine!
