Anyone know about the cameras on the M40 after J12 heading north and about J15 heading south.
They are mounted over each lane on bridges. I noticed them as they looked like observation cameras but were in each lane rather than one camera at the side of the road. Nothing from my radar detector until I was right underneath them, when I got a laser warning.
I think I was OK for speed at the time, and certainly there were plenty of people going faste, so I wont be alone if they are active.

These cameras on the M40 and the M69 have been discussed many times.
I think they are Trafficmaster devices.
Some people say ANPR, but I think that is very unlikely.
I use the M40 everyday and not had any speeding tickets.
What you should be looking out for is the unmarked police vehicles, such as a silver Vauxhall Omega with reg ending LJC, and there are others out there too, so you have been warned.

I went past these cameras today - I couldn't find any other threads about them though. Are they definitely not speed cameras? If not what are they for?
They're white video cameras mounted on a bridge above each lane with a flat black thing (radar?) next to it. No radar detected on my Bel 990 though, just a very brief laser warning when I went under the southbound ones. But there was no laser warning when I went under the ones on the northbound side.

They form part of the 'ring of steel' to protect Birmingham from terrorist attack apparently.
There was a recent post by bluepolarbear on this which resolved any fears of them being speed cameras.
I use the M40 every day and always well above the speed limit going past these cameras, so you have nothing to worry about.
You are more likely to be caught at J12 Gaydon.

My orginal comments had "ring of steel" in quotes to compare them to so called "ring of steel" around the city of London. They are not quite on the same scale. However, you will find them on every motorway into Birmingham M5, M6 (North and East of brum), M69 and M40 and they record the registration of every car that passes.

I think there is clearly a risk from Islamist terrorist groups (see 11/9/01, Bali, Madrid), but much of the threat is being played up by the UK and US governments and large sections of the media. It's in the media's interests to play up the threat - people who are scared want more news than people who aren't. Try watching Fox News...
I caught the end of an interesting programme on the BBC the other day called 'The Power of Nightmares' which explored this idea. In the bit I saw, they interviewed a number of nuclear/terrorism experts who said that in practice dirty bombs probably wouldn't kill anyone. They said the real threat is that if one of these bombs went off it would cause mass panic, because of the government/media scare stories.
I think it would be almost impossible for terrorists to hijack an aircraft now, so unless they get hold of a nuclear bomb, I don't see how they can do anything on a similar (or bigger) scale to the World Trade Center attacks.

This is not the 'War of Terror', this is regular IRA attacks.
Are you saying they need to invade Ireland and level Dublin to a smoking rubble, maybe Blair can 'stand firm' and trash Belfast?

They are defo ANPR but NOT TrafficMaster. They are run by the police to protect against terrorism. There are also an almost identical set by Gretna Green on the A74/M74 scotish border. I was told that they were set up to help combat the IRA mainland bombings many years ago.
They are NOT speed cameras
