Has anyone noticed the Advertising board adjacent to the hardshoulder on the Northbound M1 just prior to J/2.
The board must measure about 15metres across x 5metres in height.
The pole is actually about 15metres off the actual boundary of the Motorway with the result that the sign itself is level with the Motorway fence.

With my professional head on here, i would say that this is a pure distraction, especially at night because its mounted quite high on the pole.
(Nothing to do with the fact that its advertising a BMW at the moment).

What do people think about this new bread of sign..personally i dont think that it will last long.

If it advertises the exact location of all speed traps then I think it could become a good thing

can't see any problem with it as I spend most of my time looking for scameras.

on the m40 this morning i noticed one about speed cameras/avoiding losing your license or something - it was mounted on a trailer in a field... might've been for some website advertising camera locations?? didn't get a good enough look at it tho

These are probably there to distract you! (more revenue from a driver who doesn't have his eyes glued on the speedo)

You are proberbly right, but i'm getting paranoid about these scameras, I have even braked when doing the speed limit!! and driving on motorways is just rubbish now.

I consider this normal practice. It's just not worth worrying if you've drifted.

Interesting one on telly a while ago.

Large american freeway with traffic moving along and making good progress, trooper with laser gun pointing at traffic, lorry brakes and jacknifes as a panic reaction to seeing laser gun, causes pileup.

Now had the laser not had been there = no pileup.

SAFETY CAMERAS MY ARSE!

Does make me wonder why the Lorry driver was not paying proper attention to the road in the first place.
Surely if he was in proper control of the vehicle and aware of his surroundings (which driving any vehicle and especially a lorry he/she should be) then there would not have been a problem.

Mostly, drivers panic brake because they dont know what speed they are travelling at! Its called a panic reaction.

Is this because:
1) They have broken speedometers
2) They are all homicidal maniacs looking for small children to run over...
3) They are spending far too much time looking at the road rather than the speedo (if only this were the case..)
4) The wrapper on their cheese an pickle sarnie is a bit tricky to remove whilst holding a phone to their head and having a swig of coke?

It can be a multitude of reasons, but when driving, at least have the decency to pay attention!

Tony,

I personally cannot understand why there isn't a 'banner' style advert on all the major bridges on the M1. Not that I think its a nice safe idea but...

1) How much revenue for the roads could be generated? You have excellent figures of a captive audience in the millions
2) Whats the difference between this and all the billboard advertising everywhere else...especially on the major drags into London? Personally it strikes me that its a hell of a lot safer to advertise here...where most people are doing reasonably similar speeds in straight lines.....than on more loca roads....

Just surprises me that it hasnt already happened to be honest!

I've had similar thoughts. I've also wondered how long it will be before ambulances / police cars / fire-engines, etc. have bus-style advertisements plastered all over them. You can just see the wonderful irony in an ambulance on a blue light run advertising B&H

As for the adverts by the side of the motorway, if it were me paying for it, I'd probably only bother if it were a stretch of road prone to congestion to ensure you get the maximum exposure. It's certainly not a recent phenomenon - they've had them on the M6 through cumbria for years. I guess in a lot of cases it's welcome extra revenue for Farmers.

I allways thought it would be a good idea to have adverts on thoose Electronic Motorway signs, "Have a refreshing journey with a Pepsi"
