It amazes me how many people think that the only 70mph speed limit in force in the UK is in relation to Motorways.

How many PH'ers are one of those people...please be honest and dont post the answer...just yet?

Don't know 100%, I'd probably be classed as one of them

Are country lanes 70? Or are they 60 because there is no crash barrier?

Judging by the lack of response, it would seem that most people on here know the answer?

...or are too to admit it?

What amazes me is the people that are happy to go 33% above the speed limit in a 30 and 33% below it in a NSL!

...and I'll happily admit that I would have to look up speed limits for other than cars/bikes - but I know what my limit is supposed to be!

single lane NSL's are 60, dual carriageway NSLs (incl motorways) are 70.

I will admit that I had a misconception regarding when the NSL is 70 and the NSL is 60mph. I have it no longer as it cost me three points!

And on a related note, who knows the difference between a dual carriageway and a single carriageway?

I always thought

Single carriageway NSL 60.
Multiple carriageway NSL 70.
Motorway 70 unless instructed otherwise or deserted.

I always think of NSL roads with the white circle and black line as 70 mph - Correct me if I am wrong

I will correct you

NSL on Single Carriageways is 60mph
NSL on Dual Carriageways is 70mph,same as a Motorway.

Iam a firm believer that the Speed limit on Motorways should be raised to 80mph.
Purely to avoid any confusion.

Now using standard practice +10% + 2mph that would mean no tickets below 90mph

But did you know that on a single carriageway main road the limit for an HGV is 40mph? Even small trucks under 7.5 tonnes are limited to 50mph. So the one's that don't hold you up are actually speeding

If they've got lower limits for big vehicles, can we have higher limits for bikes please?

Do you like the French system which has a sensible (130K) limit in the dry and a lower (110k) limit in the wet? It always seems like a good idea to me but I wonder if it gets ignored.

When over there recently, not wanting to get a pull and an on the spot fine, I set my cruise control to 130k on the motorway. I was surprised to find that relatively few cars tore past. If you do the same exercise here (at 70 mph) nearly everyone roars past.

I agree with you Tony, 80 would seem far more sensible as 70 is ignored by almost everybody unless there is a patrol car parked up ahead.

Last weekend's Bucks Free Press article with the mistake in it didn't spur this little snippit did it?

------------------
My letter to them:
------------------

Subject: Error in recent article?

Dear xxx.

I am writing to ask whether there has been an error in the 'Motorists are slow learners' article in the BFP Motors section dated Friday August 22nd. One of the questions you list as being asked is:

What is the speed limit on a dual carriageway? - the answer published is 60mph.

This is incorrect - the speed limit on a dual carriageway is 70mph. This is assuming the vehicle being driven is a car or motorcycle not towing anything. Was there a mistake in the article, or was the answer wrong - hence why so many people got the quiz wrong?

A lot of people do actually think the limit is 60mph. Was there an error in the publishing/transposition of this article, or was the quiz wrong?

Here are some links explaining the speed limit:
etc. etc.

------------------------
The response I got back:
------------------------
Mr Jones

You are absolutely right. The speed limit is 70 mph on a dual carriageway. This was a typographical error and I am hoping that the BFP will allow me to correct this in next week's edition. The quiz was marked with the correct answer in mind, however.

I apologise for this error and many thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Regards.
