Can anyone confirm if the Colway Formula2 tyre is road legal.
www.cars.u-net.com/colwaymotorsport.htm

I want to use it on a multi venue stage rally where you have to drive on public roads between stages.

Also is the ruling different if you are on an event as opposed to nipping down to the petrol station to fill up?

many thanks

This is the situation as I understand it.

The Colway is both a tyre designed for competition use and is a retread. Its markings for sale ( as opposed to its use ) is prescribed by Statutory Instrument 1996 No. 3227 The Motor Vehicle Tyres (Safety) (Amendment) Regulations 1996

Its use is much vague with unspecific fitness for purpose iussues covered by the RTA 1986.

IMO tyres marked 'for competition use' etc are not prohibited for use under the RTA act but it would be logical that such tyres are used as part of the equipment of a car constructed or modified for competition. Obviously raly cars traverse the public road during competition and may be driven on the public roads at other times ( Subject to tax/insurance and other construction & use issues )

So IMO the answer is yes. I'd be interested to know what Colway say as I have heard different stories from other Motorsport Tyre Depts, some who concur with the above and others who do not. BiB have diffet ideas as I have heard of a case of someone who has been reported in Wales by a PC who was determined to report him for something.

From the 2002 Demon Tweeks catologue:

A moulded slick. Colways latest rally tyre designed to meet FIA international regulations that require a minimum 17% tread pattern. Road legal for link sections. A winning single venue stage tyre. Can be hand cut for other applications- wet weather, rallycross.

Hope that helps, so according to Demon Tweeks it is Road legal!

From the horses mouth...

Hello there, thanks for your enquiry. Rest assured that the Colway Formula 2 is entirely road legal, it has a 17percent tread pattern, which is the minimum legal percent tread for road use. It is therefore a perfect tyre for rallies with link stages on public roads. In fact all Colway Motorsport tyres are actually road legal, and yes, that includes popping to the shops for some milk!

Good to hear from, and good luck with your rallying.

I wonder how much of that minimum 17% tread would be left after a stage or two anyway. Lookingat the prices of them, I think they almost come in as cheap as the standard tyres on my car...hmm, this has now got me thinking!

I'll keep an eye on the tread wear and let you know how they run.

The tread pattern does look kinda trick, and as you say its gonna be fun in the wet!

cheers

Pity certain other motorsport tyre distributors ( connected with a well known National Championship ) are not so well informed as Miss Hoskins
