quoted from Autocar Sept 2 2003 -
"Leaked Goverment plans reveal that ministers want to catch speeding motorists with the same new technology being considered for nationwide road tolls after 2010.
Press reports last week claimed that electronic identification technology would be used to prosecute speeding drivers, as well as charge for road usage.
One idea is to fit microchips in registration plates to log all vehicles' movements 24 hours a day. Bought in bulk, the plates cost £5."

Another tool to fleece the motorist...
What about human rights??
Will it only be used to catch offenders? If so what about tracing stolen vehicles??
Will it apply to ALL vehicles, ie HGV's PSV's & motorcycles?
Whatever next, fitting em to bicycles!

I reckon this is the way they'll try and push it. I don't believe that they'll use the chips/black boxes to restrict the speed which vehicles travel at because then their source of revenue will dry up. And, they won't be able to fit the limiters to older cars with Carbs etc. The benefits are tiny in comparison with what we all stand to lose. It makes me scream - we really need to wake the populous up and point out the dangers of allowing the government to start controlling our lives. Thin end of the wedge etc. The Orwellian nightmare is beckoning. Labour and it's minority group think-tanks are taking us there. Get them out. Next time there's an election, for God's sake use it and vote Tory. Tony Blair has shown himself to be sh!te. Charles Kennedy will tax us even more, produce nothing and take us into Europe. I never thought much of Iain Duncan-Smith, until I saw those pictures in a national newspaper (Mail I think) of him in his Moggy plus 8 doing some overtakes. He loves his car, in the same way that we do. In the absence of anyone else stepping in for the leadership (Michael Howard??) he's the only realistic choice if you like your freedom. Sorry - rant over. J.

Classic Government bull. By the time you've read the second part of that you're so fired up that when they bring in the first bit you'll be all "Phew, lucky escape". Classic worst-case-scenario-scare-to-slip-in-less-damaging (and always intended) legistlation.

Women use very similar tactics all the time.

"I've seen this gorgeous dress, it's £160".
"WHAT?? £160??? You must be mad!!"
"Hurumph - I SUPPOSE I'll have to buy the RAG I saw in River Island for £80"

It took me YEARS to work out there was never a £160 dress.

madant, excellent summary, but in this case the gov are serious.

Almost enough for me to consider the Defender again. ie, top speed of 75, and ability to cross speed bumps flat out......

This could not happen in any other country, if any other government tried to pull a stunt like this the public would shut that country down.

It never ceases to amaze me today how few people are willing to admit to voting these Labour w*****s in! Or for that matter admit to not bothering to get off their arses to vote at all. I wonder if they have learnt anything from what has been happening in recent times and if they will do the same next time, I hope not!

There is an obvious flaw to all this, which is the fact that a foolproof system of detection would very quickly talk itself out of a job, if no one can speed then no revenue can be earned.

There is another obvious flaw, the car may be speeding, but it cannot identify the driver can it?

Personally if the Muppets ever want to make a comeback I would quite happily vote for them in preference to Labour. Not too fussy about which one would replace Mr B, any one of them could do a better job.

Funny (not) you mentioned that. This very day, reports tell us that police chiefs want to create a national database by taking DNA from newborn babies thus eventually logging the whole population. Other than the foreign illegals of course.

There is another issue, how many vehicles break the speed limit everyday? Surely the 'system' wouldn't be able to cope and would grind to a halt!!!

Other thing is to catch a speeder by electronic sensor, would need a receiver or some sort of method of picking it up (can't see the Gov buying satelite time!), hence another market for warning devices etc..

Got this reply from ABD
"Andy,

I saw that item in Autocar too and it had already been in the national press. We are totally opposed of course and will shortly be sending out a press release on the subject, which will then be posted on the website, so keep looking.

The civil liberties' issues are clearly massive and unacceptable. The Conservatives have already come out against universal road user charging using tracking techniques, as they realise that it is political dynamite. We need to do everything possible to get this idea dropped.

Malcolm Heymer
