Well, this really does take the chocolate digestive...

Offroading in the Jeep, we end up smashing the front numberplate.
We drive to Halfords, speak to the guy at halfords ( broken plate in hand, vehicle outside, and ask for another.
Were very unpolitely informed about the new regulations, and refused service. So, off home we go, with the broken plate, and consult the DVLA website. Print off the webpage concerning what documents are required, go back to halfords with a selection of documents, and the broken numberplate and ask for a replacement.

... again, we are refused. They Demand a utility bill (my girlfriend does not have any of these since she lives with me and they are in my name). we cannot produce one, and suggest that we show them the vast array of documents, including the printout from the DVLA.
The guy then tells me that the DVLA are incorrect, and Halfords requirements to issue plates are correct. I question this, and continue to explain that I am listed on the insurance document for the jeep, and that here is my license, passport, utility bills, the V5 is in her name and details our address, yet Matey Boy still refuses to accept ownership of the vehicle (I even still have the broken plate in my hand too).

What would be the likely result of being stopped for a defective front plate ?

Would our case get any sympathy ?

I knocked the front plate of my Elise and carried it in the front of the car for a couple of weeks until I got round to getting it fixed (it needed the screw holes filling - I wasn't being all that lazy).

Whenever I parked I displayed it in the front window.

I went out a few times, including a 200+ mile drive and never got stopped - but I believe if you do the worst that can happen is a £30 fine.

And the best thing that can happen is that none of those Scameras can get you, leave the plate in the boot for now.

I'm afraid that the Government think that by making you produce all this paperwork that it will prevent car crime.

Obviously your average professional car theif will have no problems acquiring plates from a different source and all this does is hinder the average law abiding motorist.

Labour and their leftwing think tanks believe following this path is a suitable replacement for BiB on the road

Goto Fancy Plates. Despite their name, they will do real sized plates, and they don't need any proof etc.

I used them for a 3/4 sized plate for my VX220, and it arrived 1 week after I placed the order...

I'd trust them more than the nut-eating ones at Halfords

Also take a look on Ebay. There are sellers that will make whatever plates you want.
