Due Care And Attention
Discussion
Sitting in a traffic queue this morning in Epsom, ambulance comes the other way. Everyone on my side of road pulls over and hugs the kerb to make a gap up the middle. Ambulance fetches up behind woman on the other side who is stopped directly opposite me. Blue lights going flat out, main beam flashing. Can't get past, she hasn't pulled over so the ambulance driver hits the siren. She SHAT herself !! Honestly she jumped high enough to bounce off the headlining. She had absolutely no idea that he was behind her.
And you try and tell me that it's driving too fast that causes accidents. Get real !

The best way of reducing accidents on the roads is to enforce an advanced type of driving course, I did one with the IAM about 15 years ago and it really opened my eyes to the dangers on the roads but also gave me the ability to use the car in the right situations, I also had the opportunity at the time to do some advanced training with the police and again that takes your skills to an even higher level, allowing you to judge the right speed for the right road/weather traffic conditions. On the test you had to be able to use the speed of the car when appropriate or you could fail the test, a commentary was also needed so the examiner new exactly what your priorities where at any time. I don't think that I would be able to get the best out of the car I drive now if I hadn't had the training.
Slighty ironic isnt it that the people who are being targeted by the speed gestapo are the ones who most consistently advocate the raising of the standard of the driving test.
On another post someone said that it should be compared to flying. One thing is for sure though, the driving test should be a LOT more difficult to pass than it is now.
Matt.

To me half the problem is that most people think they are great drivers, after all, they have managed to do a 3 point turn in a test y'know..
I favour frequent re-tests to ensure that people know the latest road law and also add in some basic car control (skid pan, snow, Observation etc)
One thing I often notice is that when an Amblulance or something does appear, a fair few people just stop dead, no matter where they are, causing even more obstruction to the Emergency vehicle as they are too damn stupid to move an extra 10 feet to make a nice space.

hey chaps, try and see how hard it is to get an "A" category on the old license. Then you'll see how difficult it ought to be for car drivers.
The gov hates bikers, and has done since day one. Now that it is clamping down on car drivers, we're starting to do something about it. Is it all a bit too late..?

I favour the idea of re-tests to keep people on their toes, as complacency creeps in to everyones driving, but it would have to be a dramatically different test to the original.
What good would be achieved by us all re-learning how to shuffle the steering wheel round without letting go and re-living the nightmare of driving everywhere at 2 mph below the speed limit?

Cool sticker!
Lemme tell you about tonight.
I am driving into a village where the limit recently fell to 30mph. They do speed traps regulary here now.
Me, and obviously the car in front were so busy checking out speedo's, that neither of us noticed the traffic car approaching with blue lights on !!!!!!
I must apologise for my total lack of observation, but I was so intent on getting to 29.9mph to avoid a nicking, that I simply was not looking far ahead.
How dumb is that? I admit I was not paying enough attention to the road, but THIS WAS BECAUSE OF THE F**ING THREAT OF SPEEDING FINES !!!!
Make of this waht you will.
Carl.

I presume everyone heard about the queen being late for her flypast recently, in part due to a learner driver doing less than the speed limit. Does that mean that they did not have enough time for the journey at the speed limits. Or where they presuming on being able to travel over the speed limits. Presumably road safety applies to all, if that's really what it is about.
I heard today that moves are afoot to increase the duration of the test from ~45 minutes to ~75 minutes, including a test of 'hazard awareness'. This is predicted to reduce the passrate from its current 60% to around 40%.
Okay, hardly the solution we're all looking for, but a step in the right direction if it comes into effect.

All to often (and by force) they are trying the make speed limits the 'be all and end all' of road safety. its bollox!

The scary bit was that they were begining to OVERTAKE traffic. Now if I had slowed down a bit earlier, and not seen them, it would have been a smash up.
How would that have looked on in the papers?
"Local man injured by speeding Police car, while not paying attention to the road - due to speed camera" ???
Yeah, I can see all sorts of nasty sh*t happening in the future. Ooops, I ran over the child because I was trying to keep to 30mph, officer.
