Mobile speed vans and the law
Discussion
Anyone know the law regarding mobile speed vans? I think I might of been snapped doing 83-85ish past one thats why. I noticed the van as I was passing it but isnt it a bit sneeky to deploy a van with no markings whatsoever - no officers on foot - no signs - the only visible markings are chevrons on the rear with 2 tiny windows on the top of the rear doors with cameras sticking out. Tell you something that stinks and is nothing more than a REAL money earner for the local authorities. If anyone can shed some light on this it would be much appreciated cos i would be really pi**ed if this was how I got snapped.
This quote is from the local police website regarding speed cameras:
Why is the camera not marked?
Under the government guidelines there is no requirement to mark a mobile camera and in fact it would be difficult to do. However fixed site cameras are marked with yellow to the front and rear. Another reason for this is that a mobile camera will always have a Police Officer with it and either he will have a marked vehicle with him and/or he will himself be wearing high visibility clothing.
Why do you hide the camera in front of the van?
It is not hidden. The camera must be able to see the passing traffic in order to take photographs, and therefore the camera must also be visible to the driver. If the camera is obscured by the van, then the van itself must be equally visible.

It wasn`t a mobile speed camera it was an ANPR, which does not have to be marked.
Mobile Gatso sits outside the van, usually at the front on a tripod.
If a Laser is used the back doors are usually open,or alternatively it fires through an open lower window either at the rear or at the side, in either case shown there is always only one camera or laser, unlike ANPR where there are two cameras, one infared one colour. They can NOT be used for speed enforcement.

ANPR= Automatic Number Plate Recognition.
It basically reads number plates and checks them against the Police National computer (PNC) and numerous other intelligence based Police databases.
It is an excellent piece of equipment for catching criminals. It is used throughout the country mostly in vans, but is now being found in traffic cars and fixed sites.

...and as I understand it, ANPR units are going to become a lot more common. The aim being not only to catch untaxed vehicles and the like but to deprive criminals of ready use of the roads (cross force-border crime has been a thorn in the police service's side for some time). Excellent use of technology IMO.

Although i agree with SOME of the above quotation Will, er, how does an ANPR catch a criminal if theres no officers further up the road to make the stop?
Horse, stable door etc...
Dont quite see how that it can catch any criminals, apart from all of us registered ones, if used in the way ive just described.

im still waiting for an anouncement on the news along the lines of:-
"after mr bloggs got snapped by a talivan,he drove to the nearest garage, filled a jeep jerrycan up with superunleaded and returned to the van,he locked the vehicle up with chains, poured petrol into the airvents and set the van on fire"
maybe its just my overactive imagination after all the gatso's being destroyed but i realy think its coming.

your right there, there is a lot of pressure put on the motorist these days, even law abiding citizens. take for example my mother of 60! drives a little 1100 fiesta everywhere at 50-60ish, you know real careful driver, anyway she once told me that she thought she had been snapped by a camera - i mean come on this is my mother!!! never! but the point i'm making is that for some people on the roads the stress and anguish caused by new technologies can be quite high...sitting...wondering...worrying...etc. she never done anything wrong eventually but speed cameras and the likes are not the answer to quite a difficult problem - rather peoples menality when they get behind a wheel of a car.
ps. do you own a ford garage cortina man??? crikey
