Additional Scamera signs
Discussion
All,
Had a thought the other day that might placate the hoards of us who genuinely despise the revenue generating scam that is The Safety Camera pertnership.
It goes something like this.
There are numerous, read hundreds, of speed camera signs all over the UK. At any one time, there is a safety camera van present at one of these sites. However, it is not clear exactly where they are stationed. You can get this info fromb teh net, but it gives you road details and not actual locations.
My thought is that by law, the vans operator would need to place a moveable sign, similar to the Police Slow sign, a quarter of a mile before the van in either direction. This they would put down at the beginning of the shift and remove at the end.
It would certainly make motorists aware of the accident blackspot that the "safety" camera is focusing on. It would also negate much of the ill feeling towards the vans, as IMHO, anyone who does not see the temporary sign would need their eyes tested.
The only problem being that it should reduce the revenue generated, and this would be a bad thing for the government. It should reduce peoples speed though, and isn't that what it's all about?

S200z,
When I say temporary signs, I mean exactly that. I do not mean the removal of the signs that are attached to poles on any given road that occasionally has Scameras present.
I concur that a blackspot remains a blackspot at any time. The irony is that Scameras rarely sit at blackspots in my experience. They merely sit where the view down the road is long and straight and they can tag you before you see them.
A temporary sign that the scamera operator would legally have to position some distance before the vans location should be warning enough. Signs that are always at the side of the road, camera present or not, lose their value after time

If they were interested in making the roads a safer place there would be advance warning of every fixed/mobile camera, say 100m. There would also be a sign 50m before it showing the speed you should be travelling at. There would be a nothing obstructing it so you can clearly see it as you drive up to it.
Guess what – they would not make any money. Chances of it happening – nil.
