Motorists and bikers in Scarborough are being warned to quieten down or risk having their vehicles seized.

North Yorkshire Police have launched a campaign against what they call "seafront boy racers" who are annoying residents and traders.

Officers intend to use their powers under the Police Reform Act to confiscate cars and motorbikes from people who ignore a warning to keep their noise down.

They say the peace of the resort is being spoiled by screaming engines and loud music.

Pc Mark Roberts, who is a community safety officer, said: "We are simply saying 'Be quiet or we will take your vehicle away'.'"

To get their vehicles back, owners will have to pay a £106 recovery charge plus a £12 a day storage fee.

The boy racers are said to be at their most annoying on Scarborough's Foreshore and the nearby Eastborough.

Pc Roberts says the milder approach of chatting to drivers has already been tried but this has not cured the problem.

Written warning

"There is a strong will in the town to regenerate the area, to build it up again," he explained.

"That becomes so much harder when you have immature show-offs making a noise."

Now people in charge of loud vehicles will get a written warning.

A second offence means the car will be removed to a police storage area.

"It is a shame it has comes to this," said PC Roberts. "But enough is enough."

What if the car is OE and therefore not modified to be noisy?

Does that include unnecesary police sirens?

Bloody right

This is targetting cruisers not you boys with loud exhausts who just travel through

This is the up and down brigade who are a pain and should be exterminated - "after a warning"

Yes they are a nusiance however lets not forget that the law being used is a catch all law. My Westfield has just passed the sva at 94 db but is much louder than the average car, so once they have dealt with the boy racers, the tree huggers might just move on to others, like tvrs etc. We as a motoring lobby should not allow any part of our rights no matter how annoying eg boy racers, caravanners, modifying cars using classic cars in cities, be erroded away. Remember many of us will have had cars with sidepipes and jack up kits in the seventies but grew out of it. Live and let live has been replaced by ban absolutly everything I don't like.

bollocks - (few beers on board)
those that want ot wake up me and my kid (8pm) by driving up and down a 30mph limited street should be shot

Its not a sport thing
or a right to bear arms thing

Its kids with too much money

When I was a beat bobby I used to tell thme to Fcuk off out into the country if they wanted to play - nowts changed!

If they dont heed the warning then its the pound for their jacked up neon lighted shit mobiles

TVRs will always be safe as long as they dont start driving up and down the sea front - which if the prices drop any lower may be next year !!

I'm with Spaximus, I hope this isn't the thin edge of the wedge! My wife can hear me driving along the bypass in my Caterham coming home late at night and it's nearly a mile away!

Rich, I was in Scarborough this summer for one night only. from what I saw parading up and down the sea front money was not a factor. The state of the cars was embarrassing.

The problem is that it's kids with no taste. Now THAT's the problem

you dont keep up with track news then? most tracks now ban noise, due to local residence complaints, by sound monitors installed by the council.
