France has just got its first fixed position speed cameras. France has had mobile radar and laser traps for years, and most people know they have the odd crack down on "timings" between toll booths on the motorways, but now France has got the equivilant of a Gatso camera.

I know it's in French, but check out......

.... and then click on the picture of the video camera just below the main picture to watch the video....

I'm sure I'll be in agreement with the french farmers on this issue.

I suspect that the proposed EU Driving Licence (aka EU Identity Card) will have space on the chip for points. It will probably be trackable by satellite too (that's a *small* joke ... at this stage) - Streaky

Yes its bad news. They have apparently ordered about 1000 cameras to be installed before next spring.

But there were already some before 'dispositif fixe existant' on the map. Now the old ones are being linked to the central computer too.

Fortunately I cant see any on the map within 300Km of here

As i recall, it was little short of the French army actually pulling a frog truck to pieces that halted a blockade not long ago, so it shoulden,t take more than enough rope tyo dislodge a few le scamera' should it?

Well that scameras gonna last all of about 5 minutes....its not even up in the air!
Mind you, if the french equivalent of Le "capitain Gataso" gets his way, itll most likely be about 300 feet in the air before coming down in bits all over the place....know what i mean?

From the camera distribution map it appears that the 'central administrators' in Paris have a bit of a downer on the Lyonnaise! Lyon has completely disappeared under a thick blanket of cameras, whereas Paris and the environs - have none.

A few weeks back I was passed by a very tasty TVR Griffith on the A8 northbound near Aix-en-Provence, making very rapid progress. Anybody here? Looks like autoroute fun time may be coming to an end.

We've tried taking the cameras out down here in Australia. Thing is now they have security cameras watching over the speed cameras.

I can deal with the speed cameras, you can remember where they are. It's the the cops that sit there with radar guns that you have to watch out for.

The NEW French "Gatsos" are supplied by a company called "Sagem" (www.sagem.com) and the equipment inside is called the "Mesta 208" which uses "K band" radar.

Some of these French cameras point at approaching cars others take photos of the rear. This will effect the range a camera is picked up by a Radar Detector.

WARNING: Radar Detectors are HIGHLY illegal in France and result in a big fine, even if the device is in the boot!!!

If you have a BEL 966 remote, they won't see your the detector, BUT I think the French police have "Radar Detector Detectors". You may or may not know Radar Detectors give out a very small amount of radar themselves, because they compare the incoming signal to the one they generate, when the two signals match..... Beep,Beeep, Beeeep, etc. etc.
