Out of interest, does SPECS work in the dark?

I can't read a front number plate, in the dark, of a car with headlights on so how (reliably) can a camera?

I've been trying to find some concrete evidence (such as the manufacturers website) to support my hunch that they use infra-red to read the number plate.

All I can find so far is a piece on www.ukspeedcameras.co.uk/ that refers to the infrared detectors.
www.speedcamerasuk.com/SPECS.htm also states that they have infra-red illuminators and can therefore work 24/7.

Edited to add second link

they do use infra red. if you see them they have "cannons" either side to project infra-red so you will be scammed in the dark

24 hour cash machines. Cool

Probably won't be too difficult to jam an IR camera with some high powered infra red LED strategically located arround your number plate - and completely inviible to the naked eye!

Would anybody like a picture of whats inside one?, how do I post a piccy up here?

Its a standard issue PIPS Technology camera, see www.pipstechnology.com, they are used by traffic master too, those blue pylons you see everywhere (every 4km by the way on all A roads)

Ever wondered why they've invested millions in a traffic knowledge system????????, All they have to do is switch on the right software!!!!!!!!

These cameras have an infrared bank of LED's so it can see in the dark or in any conditions for that matter, along with a fairly standard camera unit, the cameras can see up to 25m away. They have a infra red filter so they are uneffected by headlights daylights etc.

The image is then processed outside the camera by a system that reads the image 250 times a second, for a number plate.

At the moment the blue cameras only use the data for traffic logging, ie average of all the traffic over a period of time, however they only have to change the software.

Be very scared, there's a post about the system just been switched on in Australia, something has to be done to stop this system being switched on mainstream.

PIPS Technology has developed a Travel Time Monitoring System (TTMS) software engine that integrates directly with our ALPR system architecture. TTMS is an instation software application that uses the vehicle license plate data from multiple camera nodes along specific highway / roadway routes to calculate accurate travel times over specifically defined segments within a network.

There you go, just a software upgrade is required!
