Are there any non-police officers on this board?
Discussion
Not me. If asked, I couldn't be a magistrate either, what with the history of my driving licence.
Did a particular thread bring on the question?

PS - I think Deltaf may be plod, this forum being an escape from the stress of the job etc....wouldn't surprise me if he holds the top job in North Wales.....

Nothing sinister, just wondering how so many do-gooders spend so much of their time on this board telling everyone else that they should shut up and stick to the limits.
Maybe I've got it all wrong, maybe my definition of a "pistonhead" is flawed.
A pensioner who is a passenger on a bus (propelled by a piston engine). Is he a pistonhead?

Not me boss. Have some (retired) senior officers as friends. Have worked with the police (investigations) in various countries. Have worked against them (as an Expert Witness). Have also worked with some of the 'trench-coat and trilby' brigade in various countries too. But a copper, me ... nah! - Streaky

Pistonhead refers to a state of mind, not the vechile you are in, nor the speed you are doing.
I dream of driving the marlin flat-out round a race track, but would never consider driving past the limit (by more than say 1-4mph) on the roads.

I think you're reading them wrong.
Most likely they are saying that everybody knows what the speed limits are and it's up to the individual as to what they choose to do regarding them.
However, if you get caught, you get caught, we all know the laws and bitching about it on here isn't going to help any
Im a big boy and i know what the speed limits are and if i get caught exceeding them then ive only got myself to blame.......nobody else.
Its really as simple as that!
Its down to the individual how they choose to deal with the ticket or summons.
Ive known Police Officers who have been stopped and given tickets etc etc..some do whinge, but they are more annoyed with themselves at being caught.
There are some speed limits on roads that i regularly patrol that i most certainly wouldnt use a Prolaser etc etc because i dont agree with the limit set. That is my own choice and professional judgement.
Other people just see it as shooting fish in a barrel.
I know that a 30mph limit on a Dual carriageway is a nonsense, but if i stop someone doing 70 and above on that road where they are fully aware of the limit then i certainly would sleep well and wouldnt have a bad concience at all.
The point that im trying to make is that you pay your money and take a chance....whichever way, you will end up paying.

I thought the essence of a PHer is that they love cars and take their driving seriously and want to be good at it (and wish others were as serious about driving standards).
Enjoying pushing yourself involves exceeding speed limits occasionally, but the 'aware' driver knows the risks both in terms of having a 'coming together' with another road user, and the risk of picking up some licence points. If we are aware of the limit and knowingly choose to exceed it, then we shouldn't complain if we get caught. The ones who are not aware of the limits they are driving in are arguably the ones whose less-developed skills mean that speed limits are necessary.
Rude (whose licence is very attractively adorned with scamera points).

I think speed limits are seen as intrusional often because they are reduced on many roads with the possible premeditation of increasing revenue, however it may be that a highly skilled driver could reasonably expect to travel a road in excess of the posted limit in perfect safety, not only his or her own but those around too.
Unfortunately a significant proportion of drivers it seems to me are far from highly skilled, they lack common courtesy, are aggressive and arrogant. Part of this is a cyclical effect, lower posted limits breed frustration which intensifies the highly-strung nature of the drivers with poor self control, and self control is one of the biggest factors in road safety I woud think. Posted speed limits become lower because highly strung drivers make more mistakes and are prone to errors of judgement, where do we stop? *When* we stop probably!
It seems that (maybe) unnecessarily low limits are here to stay, the sensible driver will work to minimise his or her inconvenience, allow longer for a journey, be courteous to other road users and try to maintain steady and consistent traffic flow, etc. Unfortunately there will always be a fractional element who believe the road is their birthright and will drive in a selfish and ill-mannered fashion.
Please be calm and generous out there.

That's a pretty fair take on the situation.
edited to add, I think the anger expressed by some PHers when caught is how sneaky and underhand they are getting and it seems increasingly linked to earning some wonga than for some highly moralistic duty to protect people from danger

Well, that was a series of calm, well thought out and well presented responses (and I don't even mean that sarcastically or anything, honest).
Myself and some others are engaged in a healthy argument onthis subject on another thread, as I'm sure you know (and I use the term 'argument' in its detached, cool, rational, academic sense, as opposed to exchanging swear words and kebab wrappers in the street at 11.30 on a Friday night) .
Anyway its not my fault!
Actually I've never been caught for speeding, but that's not the point.

Quite agree. If this forum was just a board for slagging off the police, it would serve no purpose. That doesn't necessarily mean that every single BiB in the world is above reproach, but it does mean that we can talk about it. IMHO as a bit of a newbie, this board can't function in any meaningful way without the BiBs. We need their input and should value their views. Doesn't mean we have to agree with everything they say, but we should accord them the same degree of civility as we like afforded to us.
If you see what I mean.
