Driving along a road the other day and was flashed by a static Gatso on the opposite side of the road, I was driving towards it not past it. I was the only car around and was doing approx 37mph in a 30. There were lines stretching right across the road and no camera on my side. I am expecting the worst, can anyone confirm my impending doom?

I think you'll be fine, as long as it was a gatso & not a truvelo afaik they only take pictures from the rear. 37mph is within the 10%+5mph threshold also.

You might get more responses in speeding & plod section though.

That has happened to me quite a few times now. Nothing to worry about.

Also happened to me once and nothing happened. Think it just gets confused, but as one of the other guys said these are only for taking the rear of the car.

Seen it posted elsewhere on PH that it's 10% + TWO mph, not 5?

I have never seen this happen, but it seems like in the wrong conditions, this could be very off putting and could easily distract you from driving...seems dangerous to me, an accident waiting to happen.

I too have had this at night (with no repercussions). But I was very concerned about the total loss of vision that I suffered for a few seconds when the flash went off in my face.

Well tell the other half to stop taking pictures of you while you drive

They'll probably still try it on with you anyway. A friend has just been done in similar circumstances on the A303, and paid up.

Thanks all looks like fingers crossed I may be alright then, although the last post b4 this one does say someone has been pinned for it.

Cheers

Toby

PS. I'm sure it was a Gatso not a Truvelo (which I believe doesn't flash you)

I managed to set one of on the other side of a dual carriageway. I was doing an indecent speed at about 3am and the Gatso went off. At the speed I was doing it was instant ban territory. Fortunately as already stated Gatso's are only certified to do you from behind (so to speak) so you should be fine. I heard nothing more about it.

Just to add you your peace of mind, I was doing around 45mph in a 30zone (I know I'm stupid... ), got flashed but nothing came through, and this was in central London.

However, it did fry my retina's as the flash went off. Maybe that's my penance...

There`s a village near me were i have heard pepole have been fined for 34mph. The cameras pivot and can be set for either side of the road either direction.
It could just be hearsay but I don`t think so everyone localy knows there`s no margin for error.
I hope your lucky!
It seems it may depend on the policy of the local force that determine the peramiters they are operating 10% +2mph is often mentioned but who knows?
Its proberbly no consolation but your in better shape than me. 53 in a 30 [anybody use a nice TIV S3]

I was booked for 32 in a 30 zone so I wouldn't rely on that!!!!

Don't be so sure, my son got flashed by a Talivan just outside Falkirk, while drving my wife's car. She got the NIP the following day and phoned them to ask if she could see the pic as she wasn't sure who was driving. The WPC on the phone said "sure, but I'll have a quick look at it now and tell you waht I see" Anyway, what she described over the phone about the pic was the front of my wife's car complete with the NISSAN sticker my son had put on the windscreen, and said "it is a young male driver" This must have been a from facing shot, result he had to resit his test under the young driver scheme

I'm sure that it's actually illegal to book you from a Gatso facing forwards specifically because of the accident risk from 'flash blindness'. Be interesting to see if anyone has crashed into a Scamera van after being blinded/distracted due to a flash from it...

I have a question from this.... I was done for 38 in a 30 heading towards the roadside box, was this a non-legit prosecution ?

Edited: To add that I was flash-blinded for about 10 minutes and had to pull over, essentially blind, this was in my non-PH aware days or i just wouldn't have signed the form
