Hi there,

Last week I posted some feedback to the Someset & Avon Scamera Partnership, I recieved an automated reply to say they've seen it. This is what I wrote.

Thank you for posting a response page. I am a regular user of the South West's road network, I drive some 50k per year. I am very annoyed at the way
speed is being treated & promoted as the main reason for accidents, speed may well increase the risk in accident I agree but that is not the way to control the accident happening in the first place. I am a statistician myself & have read the TRL reports, I too can read them any way I want.
Speed bears little or no relation to lack of attention, bad driving, hazard awareness, driver education. If you would put your massive
resources into the above matters I'm sure the results would speak for
themselves. As for putting speed straps at the end of 30 limits near NSL's I think you find this will backfire on you. Yes it's easy to catch people speeding but check to see if there are circumstances that might make them safer than the other person who isn't speeding.

Daylight lights have been proven to MASSIVELY MORE EFFECTIVE at reducing the accident rates than trying to control speed. Again avoidance is always
better than mitigating the results of an accident.

I for one have made the effort for additional training since I past my test many years ago. I think we should all be trained to a higher standard, regular eye tests,be taught hazard awareness, accident
avoidance, defensive driving etc.

Yesterday I was travelling on a Glos dual carriageway, six cars on my left are all followoing very (stupidly)closely but at the speed limit, I'm in the outside lane with 1/4 mile visiblity front & rear passing these six cars. Who's the most likely to be picked out by your mobile laser unit?, yet who's likely to be in the safest situation?, who's likely to be best
situated to see an approaching hazard?, who's most likely to be able stop or avoid said hazard, who's got space to adjust their speed to allow road
users in out of lanes & slip roads?

If your telling me I was the most likely to receive a NIP in the post then
I think it proves mine & many others viewpoint.

I also beleive the proliferation of exteneded 30/40/50 limits do nothing to encourage people to pay attention, I think it makes them more complacent. Highlight the hazards or teach people to see them for
themselves, don't just simply try slowing them down for when they do have the accident.

Police Class drivers are probably proof enough that education is the right
route. The current learner driver system is self financing so no excuses
there.
