Safety Camera Got me - points + fine ? :(
Discussion
Hi,
About a week ago, i was leaving the city... and going towards my missus house. I was travelling at the speed limit, with another car right up my arse all the way...
Going down the road, the traffic lights, had turned to an Amber. I was still going at the limit, before I realised they actually had turned and as i was talking to my missus, they turned to red. I looked in my mirror and there was this car still up my arse all teh way.
How could I stop? I went through the light about 1/1.5 seconds after the lights had gone red. And there wasnt a car in sight. (besides the one travelling close behind me). Im wondering what I can do about this. I have received a letter and they wish me to get back to them within 28 days with my name and drivers license number etc...
What are my legal options out of this? I've only been driving a year and I dont want to have 3 points and a fine over my head. Especially over xmas. I got lots of presents to buy the family and missus, so all my money needs to be well, with me..
Hope you guys have some good ideas on my legal options.
Appreciate it. Thanks
Reaps
p.s. The car behind was able to stop, him being so close to me, i wasn't. What Can i do?

Not a lot you can do - I've heard of people escaping because the car behind has either blocked the view of the plates from the camera or the police have accepted the proximity to be a valid reason for not breaking hard.
You can consider the unsigned NIP route (search the forum for 'unsigned NIP')...

Does anyone else think the "NIP what do I do?" threads were much better when 318 was still around? ;-)

it was more fun lol
Consider this carefully
You may want to fill in the form, and attend court. Tell the court you did what you did to avoid a collision - don't forget we are usually taught to check the mirror before we brake. Insist you would have stopped, and you have made provision to do so, however if you did, the vehicle behind coming at the speed it was would have smashed into you. Therefore your actions prevented injury, money, and police time etc. You only did it as a preventative measure, of course that is if you did

basicly mate you should have done an emergency stop and let the arsehole behind worry about stopping.if he hit you he would have been done for driving without due care, his insurance company would have gone mental and you wouldnt have had to take 3 points.
if you keep going once the light has changed then you loose as he doesnt care,it aint him who gets 3 points for jumping the red.......its you!.
i was cought out like this on the a127 by a sunlight delivery lorry driver from southend when he decided (about 40ft from the lights) that he would swing out from behind another truck without indecating and try to remove my front end at the same time.unfortunatly the w
r blocked my view of the traffic lights aswell and i went through a second after the red and i still got done for the 3 points and the fine......so you aint alone mate!

This probably makes sense if you've already got 9 or more points... otherwise a bad idea IMO. For a start, you're assuming the numpty was insured. Even if he was, you've still got the hassle of getting the car fixed, and you may not even be able to drive it home either. And if either car is American the whole lot could go up in a huge fireball. So avoiding collision is probably generally the better strategy...

the way i see it is if the lights red then you should stop.....if the twat behind wants to sit so close that he can read the washing label on your calvins and cant stop thats his tough titty!.

if after the accident you cant drive the car home due to the damage caused by 'tailgating arsehead' there is a company called helphire who will help.£10 is all it costs and they deal in non-fault accident victims only.they will give you a hire car with the equivillent cc as your own,get the car assessed, take it to an approved repair garage, deal with the other persons insurance company and any legal and medical problems the victim (you) may have after the accident and then once its all said and done, will send the driver who hit you's insurance company a nice and heafty bill for the hire car, repairs, legal costs, etc.

as someone who has been into the american and custom scene for years i will have to say that youve been watching too much film and tv.american cars dont always explode as soon as some tit hits you up the back, this is a load of rubbish.the only 2 cars i can remember that are prone to this was the old ford pinto (weak rear end cell design which caused the petrol tank to split and ignite) and the crown victoria (bought to the publics attn due to some police officers and taxi drivers dying in fires after accidents).

and how would you do that, being in front of said numpty and him coming up your arse faster than bubba with a case of premature ejaculation???

So 1 -1.5 seconds after they changed, you ran a red light. your defence , you were chatting to the missus ?
If I were you I'd take the points. Cos if that's your line of defence you could be charged with undue care and attention and get a lot more points and a far bigger fine.
Moral of the story, watch what's in front not behind. You were lucky nothing else about, if there was you could have done nothing. Too busy watching behind you, chatting to the missus, and generally behaving like a plonker. I've a feeling these 3 points could be the first of many.

This sounds like an extremely useful service, but it still doesn't prevent it being a pain in the arse. At the minimum, a previously smooth journey turns into a saga involving hours of waiting around for tow trucks, replacement transport etc.

True. Sometimes they carry on being thrashed for hours with steam coming out of the rad and bodywork scraping on the tyres until the driver gets a chance to commandeer a better vehicle.
...haven't you ever come across "flammable American steel" humour?

I regard a collision as a greater failure than a trivial infraction of the law that doesn't harm anyone. So, if I can see that there is no conflicting traffic, and I can therefore avoid a collision by running the red light, chances are I'll run the red light. It is much better, of course, to recognise that the lights might change and that the standard amber period would not in the circumstances be long enough to stop safely, and come off the throttle far enough back from the lights to slow to a more appropriate speed; I agree with bobthebench that "chatting to the missus" is not the best way to deal with the situation
