Well, my son got caught for speeding last night - 48 m.p.h. in a 30 limit. Radar gun on the A4 in Reading. Got an FPN - 3 points and 60 squid, which isn't a bad deal IMHO. No excuses, and he took it like the man he is.

He got a producer and found to his horror that his MOT expired on Friday - d'oh!

He's booked an MOT NOW, but what will happen when he produces the expired certificate?

Worst / best case scenarios, anyone?

Not the worst crime in the world, especially if he can state that he has since had it MOT'd.

It won't really make much difference at court, however will show that he meant well. (We have all forgotten about an MOT at one time or another - well I have anyway)

My guess - And thats all it is.... Is a fine (can't be more specific, as it varies) and a ticking off by the mag.
I would be surprised if it goes any further, as you do not have to bring into account the speeding, as that was dealt with by way of FPN and is completely dealt with.

So, the scenario is...Your son going to court with an expired MOT, which has now been amended. Should take about 5 minutes in court....

Hopefully.

Hope that helps a bit, I do ramble on sometimes.
Mike.

Mike,

Thanks, he's feeling pretty sorry for himself at the moment and the tone and content of your response will help a lot.

And Muley - tell your son that Reading is about as car-unfriendly as it gets.

No speeding or illegal parking allowed!!! And lots of traffic jams too

Puggit,

Tell me about it! A complete nightmare of a place to use or park a car. I use the train whenever I go there, despite the cost and abysmal reliability.

Why produce the expired one? Go to the station at a busy time, and take the new one. I'd bet the chances are they won't notice. If they do, then explain the situation. I had a producer given to me years ago, and I took the old insurance certificate by mistake. They never noticed.

I see that recent insurance certificates don't state the make or reg of the car!

Would they really send someone to court for being 48 hours overdue on an MOT?

They would simpo, as they would be obliged to do so by summonsing the 'offender' (I will use that term loosely).
In this case, yes it is expired, but by 48 hrs, and Muleys son has arranged another.
Smart suit, lots of good attitude and you never know..

I agree with what Mike has said totally, but i would also advise to pay the ticket ASAP.....wouldnt like them to reverse the option of the ticket because of the impending Mot bit.

And if your going in with the new MOT that has the wrong date or the old one that is out of date, Use the art of distraction .... Take a big box of Doughnuts, tell the chap on the front desk there for him and his collegues. Very soon you'll have a front desk full of PC's not being one bit intressted in the producer :-)

Ive had this, on a company car. got stopped for a failed headlight (checked the bloomin thing that day as well!)

MOT had expired 3 months before hand, company account when handing over the keys said "everything is dealt with, you just drive it"
I was let off, I showed that I had booked it in immediately, had written a memo to the company boss explaining, and showed that to the police.

I would suggest your son takes the Old and New MOT to the station to show he is willing.

I had 'similar' situation to Stooz. Completely forgot about MOT while moving house and didn't find out til I got a producer 4 months Later. Booked it straight in, which it failed and cost me £600 to sort, and meant I was over the 7 day deadline. They made me sweat for another 3 months b4 sending me a letter saying they weren't going to prosecute. Probably cos any fine was going to be way less than the £600 bill (I'd showed them the invoice from the garage)

An update. My son got the car MOT'd - it sailed through. Produced the old and the new MOTs, insurance certificate and license. The desk admin has cautioned him for driving while uninsured (insurance invalid if car not MOT'd) taken his license written up all the details and filed a report. Could take up to six months to see if they will proceed apparently. FPN has been paid.
