These are the small (dare i say trendy) Commuter type Scooter/motorcycles which have a roof, windcreen and wiper and you are strapped in with a seatbelt.

This seems to be a growing trend and one which the riders are collecting £30 tickets as if they are going out of fashion.

I ceertainly wouldnt ride onwe without a helmet and i certainly wouldnt want to strap myself to it...its tiny!

The question is, would you ride one without a Helmet?

Nope wouldnt ride one without a helmet, but it is interesting that we are the only country where it is illegal to do so IIRC.

I understood you *did* have to wear a helmet.
I understood the BMW had been withdrawn from the UK.

I would always wear a helmet but it's a f**king disgrace the government tell me too.

Toad,
I/We fully understand what you are talking about but we dont make the laws, sadly.

But these C1 things are..hmmmmm, how can i put it. Hideous to say the least.
We are getting loads of riders getting stopped and not wearing helmets because they think that they are protected byt the infamous BMW build quality.

I will post pictures if/ when i see one of these skidding along the A40 and we can all see how protected they are

Of course I'd ride one with a helmet - so no-one could tell it was me on the thing!

I wouldn't want to ride one atall......any self-respecting biker wouldn't I imagine ......but if I HAD to, I'd wear a helmet. I would feel pretty uncomfortable about being strapped in though

and for some reason they all seem to ride these things like (a) they've stolen them and (b) its the last journey they are evr going to make in their whole lives (which may be true!).

I know I'm generalising but I get the feeling that riders of these seem to think they have an invisible forcefield around them. i have nearly been knocked off my motorbike by one and almost taken one out in the car in the course of the last week.

Funny this thread should come up now. I started thinking about buying one yesterday.

Reasons:

I have to drive 8 miles to the station each day and invariably the last mile is nose to tail queues. Stop start at walking pace. A bike would enable me to edge along the queues (slowly and safely) and cut about 15 minutes off my 2 hour commute

I currently pay over £1,200 a year to park my car at the station. Scooter would be free.

My 2.5 litre Jeep doesn't do 100mpg

The C1 is the only bike that I could stay relatively dry on without having to wear a load of waterproof clothing over my suit.

It looks very strange - very ugly in fact. And its expensive new, but not too bad secondhand.

Its the only bike that fits what I want it for.

IMHO if you're strapped in you do NOT have to wear a helmet, or is GB law still out of date? Certainly here on the continent they're exempt from helmet law, however I wouldn't ride without!!!

griff2be - Perhaps a Honda Gyro Canopy ?
Boot, roof, much more stable than the C1, cheap as chips, Stirling Moss drives one.

Tony,

As you and others have intimated, being strapped in to one of these things is probably not desireable. But, would you be technically opening yourself up for a ticket if you were to ride one without belting up? Certainly in a car, it's illegal if belts are fitted and a belt is fitted to the C1...

I thought it was legal to ride without a helmet - I know one of the chaps I work with comes to work on one everyday without a helmet.

He also showed me some research (he's out at the moment so I can't give you the internet link) that had been done that showed that if you were in an accident and had the belts fasted (they have two belts that fasten diagonally across your chest in oposite directions) you were at a considerably greater risk of neck injuries from whiplash and other neck injuries, as a result of the weight of the helmet and you being strapped in place.

They don't half look girly though.....

I have heard through a BMW dealer ship in Surrey (Cooper BMW - Burgh Heath) that a case went to court and the rider won it!! don;t know much more than that - I would never rider one - much rather get on the GSXR and stick to 29mph

The court case was - I believe - in a lower court and so does not yet have the force of law. However IIRC the police have not yet appealed.

Until the law is completely clear, I'd imagine that you'd be stopped more often when not wearing a helmet than when you are. Depends if you're willing to accept the aggro.

This is right - earlier this year there was a decision before the magistrates court which, whilst being mildly persuasive, does not have to be followed by other magistrates nor the Crown Court etc.

The defendant gave evidence that he'd obtained from BMW that the bike was safer without a helmet because of the way the seat belts worked - the added weight of the helmet actually made the rider much more likely to suffer injury than without.

Not necessarily, for an 8 mile commute in slow traffic it'll be as quick as anything and it's not, IMHO, as tragic as the C1.
