for treating the scamera story well (albeit briefly). Highlighted rising convictions from 1996 to 2001 with no noticable impact on KSI figures, and referred to the amout of money taken in fines - Streaky

I have a question, i don't mean to crash on the parade. But they said between 1996 and 2001 the number of accidents had remained constant. But between 1996 and 2001 the number of cars on the road has increased greatly, has it not?

So this means the ratio of accidents to cars has fallen. So something has to account for this fall in accidents. Not saying it's speed cameras, but there is something to account for this fall.

Agreed - they had to take a fairly diplomatic stand, I'm sure. Just the sort of coverage which is needed and should be repeated.

See also Times Driving section. Perhaps the message will start filtering through to the Numptyland that elects the decision-makers?

What's of more importance is the number of miles covered, if you're looking to be accurate.

A good piece that! Problem is, how many people that believe that "speed kills" propaganda watch Top Gear?

Not many, IF any!

Very true.

totally agree with the sentiment

Doesnt this follow on from the press turn on scameras piece

No reductions in road deaths but a HUGE revenue earner!

Did see that the a61 ripon got a mention on his map!

Incorrect; the figure usually used is of fatalities/billion vehicle Kms. It is this figure which historically feel at about 6%/annum. The fall has now ceased, and in some areas is actually rising slightly.

1) It's not a fall; that is the point, and
2) It is speed cameras (and the policy behind them). That is demonstrated by the fact that countries who do not have a draconian 'speed kills' enforcement policy are still seeing the ~6% year on year improvement.

It's worse than that; not only is there no improvement, it is making things worse. The 6% year on year improvement has stopped.

The piece did end rather limply though - "what shall we do about this?".

Well Top Gear - if you'd bothered reading Graham Bell's correspondance....

Graham - can I suggest you start bombarding Top Gear?

On the map they held up most of the accident blackspots were all up north.

Does this say something about northeners driving skills?

Hi puggit,

Already e-mailed them a week ago and had nothing back but standard auto responder message. In view of last night's prog I'll be e-mailing them again.

Might have more impact if we ALL started bombarding Top Gear.

Nah, it's all you Southerners that venture too far up the country. First time you get to drive a road with no one to hold you up and you spin off and crash

BTW, I thought the majority of the roads were in the midlands.

I can smell revolution. There was also a good piece in the Sunday Times yesterday...

www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2105-902800,00.html

If things are going to change, it press coverage like this and from Top Gear that is needed. Now it just needsto be on the front page.

The story in the times is quite scary these "Saftey Camera Partnerships" seem accountable to no one..

Intersting that Jeremy Clarkson specifically quoted TRL and then said they came up with the 7% figure.

For TRL's view on what the real figures are, look at page 3 of;
