Coming down the M74 yesterday afternoon - somewhere near Lockerbie. Tax gatherer on an overbridge.

Luckily (I hope !!!!!) saw the barsteward in good time.

However, what the fk is the point, in terms of safety. in sending a Talivan to nick a few unsuspecting punters on a virtually empty motorway, in perfect visbility, on a Sunday afternoon ??

And what is more, I bet the baard was on overtime for working on a Sunday as well !!!!!

Blood temperature back to normal level - thanks for reading !!!

I am clearly a bit dense ....

It was a tax-gathering camera van. It had "safety camera" or some such written on the side.

What's an anpr ?????????

Automatic
Number
Plate
Recognition

Scrote capture device. To be applauded, IMHO. Although I might have to fit some real plates now

And what does it do with that information? Let's say it sits there all day on a bridge and clocks 500 unregistered untaxed vehicles, what exactly does that acheive? I could understand if they had a cop car with it that could chase down any offenders but a van on a bridge?

They're now fitting them to the roof of cop cars
So if you see a cop car with what looks like a boxed rear facing camera on the roof then say knowledgably to your passenger
"ah - look ANPR!" Oh how impressed they'll be

Yeah. I saw my first scamera van in sussex yesterday. Only a couple of days ago I said on this site I thought west sussex plod were doing themsleves a few favours keeping the public on side. No more.

Pease Pottage Services junction ROundabout sitting on the motorway bridge. Marked White van with 'Accident Investigator' or some such written on the side of it.

Yeah, like people are gonna fall for that.

V. dangerous place to stop. High bushes obscure the van as you go round the R/B. Much as I'd love to see the camera weilding @#£$#@#£ get a stiff neck it would probably be a woman in a fiat panda with two kids in the back that came to grief on the money grabbing @#£$#@#£.

How the hell is parking round a blind corner on a 70 limit R/B safer than 85mph on a motorway?

@#£$#@#£.

I think of greater importance to us in the SE is that you have empty motorways on a Sunday afternoon?!

Lemme at 'em!!!

I just happened to be in Scotland for the weekend !!! My usual experiences are on the M4, and that is usually just as bad as motorways in your neck of the woods !!

All ANPR means is that people driving untaxed/uninsured/stolen cars will have to steal or duplicate the plates of a taxed insured motorist. The plus points are that they can drive at whatever speed they like *and* visit London for free!

there are always ways to try and beat systems

Hell - Ive said it a thousand times - if criminals put as much effort and intelect into dailythings for the good of us allthen the world would be a better place - but some choose not!

Dont forget if people report theft of their number plate then that too gets put on ANPR!

It seems Dumfries & Golloway Police have a recently aquired new camera van toy that they like to wheel out occasionally (still to see it in urban areas though). Whether it is scamera and/or anpr, I don't know. First time I saw it it was pointing the other way in an NSL
That bit of M74 is known (to locals anyway) to be regularly patroled by proper trafpol so be aware.
