The agency would have its own traffic officers patrolling roads, sorting out incidents such as crashes and keeping traffic moving.

A Department for Transport official said: "This will free up 550 full-time officers to concentrate on crime in England and Wales."

How long before they look after speed cameras?

More jobsworths with quotas?

Will they have power to stop motorists?

Why aren't the police federation up in arms about this?

They will have power to stop etc etc and this has been bubbling for a while now. I think that i posted about it about 6 mths ago following a Road Traffic training course i was on.
They showed us a pretend Accident scene on a Motorway and asked us to watch it from beginning to end and then comment on the missing pieces.
Well dont be surprised but the missing pieces were all Police.....not one in sight.

If this is the taste of things to come, thank god ive only got 10yrs to do.....

Yes, this has been discussed before tonyrec.

It's a disgrace to use civilians (bloody jumped up Talivan operators) in such a key area of POLICING.

I imagine police would be required at some scenes to keep order, preserve evidence etc. but people trained to keep the traffic moving without comprimising the investigations and safety of the scene would be of benefit.

My dad was a firefighter for many years and quite often he would return from an accident and would say that they all raced to the station, screamed to the scene (between 3 and 6 of them) and found all they had to do was sweep the road of glass and car parts while the police watched!

If they need more officers why not just employ more Police officers?

Let me guess, these 'monkeys' will work for peanuts!

So how long before the Police are completely replaced with a lower cost alternative, (that presumably have less training and expertise) now when all the Cops are made redundant and people realise the H.A.T.P are a bunch of to55ers, the public will complain and the H.A.T.P will have a recruitment drive - the only suitably qualified candidates will be the now unemployed cops, so the Gov't get the cops back at a lower cost.

Conspiracy Theory? Cynical? me? surely not but I wouldn't put anything past this lot.

How do you trafpols feel about a 50% cut?

In a similar vein, and this has always bugged me....are the British Transport Police actual police? IE do they have the same powers? I'm guessing this Highways Agency mob will be something similar? What odds it'll end up being run by private companies? Jarvis anyone?

The regulation of traffic was taken over by the police 'cause there was no other agency available. It makes sense to use non-police officers for traffic flow and accidents, leaving police officers performing functions that require a warrant card. It certainly makes more sense than using the untrained to patrol estates, etc.

A police officer is an expensive resource. Also the police attitude with things like accidents is to find a culprit and then prosecute. What we really need is an agency to 'normalise' matters after an accident by getting traffic moving immediately and shove the detrius to the side of the road. Police should only be involved in matters of serious injury and death, and even then only as a co-ordinator at the scene. It works with fires and I see little difference.

However, every time a function is taken from the police, it is a cock-up. Take council traffic wardens and their requirement to hit targets. When, it is not if, when traffic regulation is passed to road agencies you will look back on the present time and say that this was a golden age, speed cameras notwithstanding.

The logic for having specialist is irrifutable, apart from the fact that the Government will get it wrong, just like they always do.
