a number plate question for the BiB
Discussion
PLates on cars manufactured before 1 Jan 1974(or is it 72 can never remember) can be the Black/white or Black /silver.
After this date they all must be the white and yellow flavour with new replacement places being upto the new standard.
Thus if you want an old pressed aluminium yellow white set legaly you can't you must use plastic.....unless you find the right people

The date was January 1st 1973.
I bought a new Triumph Spitfire mk 4 on January 1st 1973 and fitted black/silver "mirrorline plates", which were technically illegal by one day, but I never got stopped by the BiB, in the three years I owned the car....

falsely displaying a n incorrect plate is a more hefty fine and is endorsable I think..something like 3points and £1000.
Displaying NO numberplate is the non endorsable £30 job...silly isn't it
But incorrect plate means the actual numbers and letters on the plate doesnt it
I would have though this would be dealt with under the vehicle defect thingy

Schurely having "no plate" would be worth more than 30 clams to the BIBs, or else everyone planning to speed would take off their registrations.
Some of us do!
It *is* 30 quid non endosable.
After you've been done a few times they can get the DVLA to remove your registration and make you drive on a Q plate. That's it.
Crazy world.

That is very true.......only heard of it happening once thought.
It was on a 2 year olf Fireblade and the rider was a ..............baffoon.
I do this a lot on long journeys.
Are ther eany circumstnaces wher eI could get in big trouble for a first "no plate" offence?
I use tape and it's blatent! (I prefer not to insult a PC's intelligence with a dirty plate!) Mate's think it's the other way round - that the tape is more insulting to plod...
Heres an interesting one for you. I am currently based in Gibraltar which as you more than likely know is a British colony with British law etc etc.
This place is plagued with boy racers, neon lights and shopping trolley spoilers as far as the eye can see but I would say 20% of the cars I see on the road here have black plates with silver lettering.
The BiB here don't seem to mind, infact I quite fancied some on my car
if no one bothers.

if no one bothers.there is a golf clipper convertable that has been driving around on black/silver plates for at least a couple of years near me yet there is no way it was built in 1972!!
as long as a plate can be read from the same distance as a std plate i dont realy see the problem with this myself.......its just petty legislation.
(like stopping the 'free tax for cars over 25' rule to just cars built before (iirc) 1973).
