There is an email circulating claiming that specs have been installed within the early warning gantries over motorways such as the M6 and M62. Has anyone heard anything to back this up?

If they haven't yet, I'm sure they soon will be.

Sounds like another Urban Myth. there are too many sick individual(s) out there with access to e-mail - Streaky

Edited to say that SPECS was installed on the M6 Thelwell Viaduct (J19-21) from Aug02 to Apr03 (10) and on the M62 J7-9 from Jul01 to Dec02 (16) - S

I have seen some large camera like thingies on several of the overhead gantries. They are positioned to the back of the gantry and all the ones I have seen (mostly on the M6 Midlands) have a bag over them.

Incidentally, to the Specs things work at night. If I am on the motorway after dark, trucks usually go blasting 'thru at well over 40mph. Do they know something we don't, cos if they thought they could get nicked, i'm sure they wouldn't do it.

SPECS uses infrared light to illuminate, so it works at night - S
