I,ve got a cherished number that I want to fit to my car. It has 3 numers and 3 letters only.

Can I cut it down to make its frontal area as small as possible to (a) aid airflow at the front and (b) reduce the visibilty to lasers, scameras etc?

I think part (b) neatly describes why you can't

I think you can, as long as the letters are the standard font, size and spacing.....

of course you can...

While your at it, remove the reflective white backing and use slightly less reflective paint on the rear of it, (Light Grey primer is ideal) It's still white but the distance at which the Talibanns can you is reduced somewhat.

MoT man has'nt noticed any of mine yet.....

Legaly yes you can as long as the letter spacing is correct and the gaps round the edge is correct. From memory it is 11mm between letters and the edge and 22mm between letter groups. It should have the manufacturers name and the BS number on it. If you cut that bit off it will be illegal so make sure the letters are positioned over that.

I have a Halfords one which I cut down but I had to get them to put the letters etc to the right so I didn't cut the BS number and halfords off.

Can anyone point me to the exact regulations governing the displaying and making of numberplates?

Does the maker's name have to appear on the front? I fail to see why I should advertise (say) 'H4lf0rds' and pay them for the privilege. Worse, if true, why the government should force me to advertise a commercial organisation.

Many years ago when I went to collect a new car I noted that the dealer had put on number-plates bearing their name. I asked what discount they were going to give me for advertising them for the next three years. they were astonished at my request and refused. I refused to accept the car with their advertising on it and in the end they replaced the number-plates. Never took it to them for servicing though .

I think they just have to put their post code on the plate
