Speed fears at remote school

A single track road next to one of Scotland's most remote schools is posing a safety hazard to children, it has been claimed.
Parents and teachers want to reduce the speed limit outside Kinbrace Primary in Sutherland from 60mph to 20mph.

Their campaign has the backing of local Liberal Democrat MSP Jamie Stone.

But Highland Council said it could not act - even though the Scottish Executive is funding a major programme of speed reductions at schools.

Parents and teachers at the school said the single track road posed a serious safety risk.

There is no pavement outside the school and children and staff are frequently exposed to close encounters with traffic.

I just don't understand - here is a perfectly valid reason to drop a speed limit!

And how much of that traffic is in some way related to the school (eg. parents, teachers, public transport, deliveries)?

Nevertheless, a reduction during school pick-up and drop off times when the amber lights flash could well be appropriate in this case. Dropping the limit over a long stretch of the road 24X7 is probably not indicated.
