Just got a text from my ex-missus.

She's living in Middlewich with a family of 4. Stepfather has just come out of the Army down South. They haven't told the Council that they have a lodger. Rent is account to account transfer each month. Landlady hasn't told house insurance or mortgage people.
Issue 1?

Landlady has received letter from Council pointing out that she owes 18k in benefits. Landlady's ex has shopped her it seems.

Landlady admits to my mate that she is as guilty as the day is long but she can't pay. Council have said they will issue a 'property order'. What does this mean?

My mate is beginning to make plans to jump ship at my instruction, but is she going to be in the st for being 'accomplice' etc.

My views on situation are fairly obvious and PH-standard.

1) Get her out of there ASAP
2) Call the anonymous benefit fraud hotline.
3) Never gove it another moments thought.

I cannot see any grounds that your mate could be liable for anything - in fact as soon as she found out the situation she moved out & informed the authorities...

I'm trying to get more details about why she is liable for 18k. Probably claiming for him to live with her whilst he is serving in Infantry regt?

As she's your ex I'm not sure why its your problem, however as you're sort of involved.......

1. If she hasn't told the mortgage people, she's in violation of her mortgage T&C's..... they may not care, or they may hit the roof.

2. If she hasn't told the insurance, the cover on her home and contents could be void. Your ex's stuff will therefore not be covered.

3. If she's not told the council etc, she's not told the tax man..... who might take an interest.

4. I'm guessing you ex is paying enough to change the landlady's benfits entitlement. Which may account for their interest.

Personally if your ex is your mate, I'd get her out of there asap.

I wouldn't get involved mate, otherwise she'll be hounding you for every little problem you have, might be alright now, but your life will be hell when you get another missus, just my 2c anyway.

We are still good mates though, so I want to look out for her. But at the same time her Landlady has been raking it in by claiming for single Mum allowance for ages!

I think they are onto her, as her ex tipped them off, and they have written to her with a demand for 18k.

Obviously she can't find that money, but do they do 'finance'.
