I've wondered this since doing some advanced driving over the summer.

Say your driving down some country lanes which were quiet and you had a police car behind you.
Would they stop you if you used advanced techniques like using the whole width of the road to see further into bends even if you weren't breaking the posted limit?

If so, what sort of penalties if any are there for this?

Yeah thats true.

Would it depend on what type of police were behind?

I.E Traffic police have had more driving training and would recognise what was happening in front of them while a non traffic copper perhaps wouldn't understand what was going on?

A couple of years ago I was out on my bike, heading down the A24 to a mate's (Incorrigible as it happens). My usual high speed idiocy was curtailed as a BiB bike pulled out ahead of me. I'd read about using the road to see further, using vanishing points and about Trafpol training so I followed him for a mile or 2 before starting to mirror his road position etc. After another couple of miles he started to increase the pace a bit, so I followed. I turned off about 15 miles later at a roundabout having learnt more in 30 minutes than the previous 2 years of biking.

I am also now less of an idiot (well, mostly)

Edit to add a point: I think Trafpol would be fine, not sure about less car qualified BiB.

I agree. I've followed a few non-Trafpols and I'm sure some of them have never heard of road positioning and vanishing points

Ere, I'm not traffic, never have been, and I'm a Class 1 driver. Gobblers have to be a certain standard, but there are many others who drive equally well!!!

Thats a good point!

I was fortunate enough to get my Advanced driving qualification whilst on Division.
I have many friends who 'punt' the RT Car around area whilst being Class 1's on Division. They have done the same driving as me but not things like TPAC etc

Snip tale of impromptu biking with Plod biker.

Was out near Petworth. (V. near the A24)

PLod biker was waiting in a firestation. He pulled out in front of me and in the same manner as you he upped the pace and indicated I was safe to follow at pace.

We had a great blast!!! Miles of twisties and a safe but swift pace. Was a little concerned he was going to entrap and then book me but on the whole loved it!

He was fast and v. smooth.

Frankly if the guy had had my raw talent in addiiton to his training he would have been pretty good! ;-)

A plod mate confirmed he probably *was* happy for me to follow. Much like the plod on PH's activities it was a great bit of community policing!

Frankly without PHBiB, Bikesafe and Plod bikers like this chap I'd prolly be in a church tower outside Scotland Yard with a sniper rifle and an inane grin!!!

I've been stopped a couple of times by the local Panda police for "we assumed you were drunk when we saw you wandering across the white lines!", first time I said nothing & they breath tested me, second time I actaully explained to the young chap what it was all about.

I even asked him to stand in the road, (we were on the approach to a bend) at the normal position one would be when driving & asked him how far up the road he could see, then showed him the other position & repeated the question. I think he was enlightened slightly. I suggested he would learn lots if he was traffic police.

PS I did used to live opposite their station so they saw me nearly every day, they were always interested in the selection of fast cars I had
