My mate told me the other day that if you come up to a Red light and roadworks, and there is nothing coming the other way you can proceed as normal and it is perfectly legal to do so, but if you cause an accident then you are fully responsible and will be prosecuted accordingly.

He only come out with this after he decided to drive straight through a red light at roadworks.

This sounds like complete tosh to me, it would be like saying you could drive through the Red light at a pedestrian crossing, as long as no-one is crossing.

Is he right??

This has been covered before, IIRC the BIB said that they have the same standing as normal lights, so he is talking tosh.

He's right. Breaking any law is only illegal if your caught.

I don't tend to stop for pellican crossings either despite the light being red, if no ones crossing. You do take on a degree of responsibility for what happens though, just like speeding.

Do have a look in the rear view first to spot a BIB jobsworth.

As one PH'er once said. In the absence of common sense I tend to use my own

Bib would have had some fun down my road lately. Roadworks about 50 ft from my drive. Most nights they were faulty and stayed on red in BOTH directions til about 8.30am when the 'workers' turned up. As the alternative route would be over 3 miles, everyone just drove straight through

If the lights are clearly not working then surely it won't be illegal to drive through them?
