Hypothetical question here, what would you imagine would happen if someone were to remove both numberplates and drive around say, for a year without them?

What's the penalty for not having them, and what's the likely punishment? I probably only see one or two police cars per week. Probably only one a month in a position to stop me.

With fewer police on the roads what's stopping people ditching number plates?

AFAIK its just a £30 penalty with no points.

If it can be proven that you have set off Gatsos OR committed any other Offences etc then you will be arrested for the Offences of Deception, Perverting the Course of Justice........to name but a few.

If not, then, as Mrs Fish has already pointed out then it would simply be a £30 Fine

Chances of proving it beyond reasonable doubt I guess are slim.

I've driven my Dax Rush over 400 miles, one journey being a 4 hour round trip, with no plates. Didn't get stopped once, not even a flash or comment from other motorists. Bought petrol from a busy garage and nobody commented. Even overtook a police car on the A1 and not even a minor tug.

I was legal, SVA test, post SVA rectification work and insured on VIN. No plates or tax disc.

If I can do it in a bright yellow/silver car with no windscreen and an engine that sounds like a escapee from a F1 meeting (it failed SVA on noise, amongst other things) then it must be so easy for other cars to wear false plates and never get detected.

If you've got a Mundano in a common colour with std wheels and good tyres and tax disc, you're never going to get pulled whatever plate the car wears. (Add a baby seat and daft 'child on board sticker' in the rear window for good measure !) Now there's a thought !

Tony

Sake of argument again????

So you stop Muncher without his plates on his registered vehicle you don't have to give him a FPN do you? Have you the discretion to report him for summons and a Court appearance where he can be fined up to &1,000.

I know why FPN was brought in, but your feeling bellicose and want a better result than 30 notes.

All hypothetically speaking of course, if I want to be a lawyer, I have to be "clean".

Yes i/we could do that without problem.
If it was a persistant offender then i dont see that it would be too hard to prove

I did several similar runs in my first kit car. Must have clocked up a few hundred miles. Southampton to Gillingham for the SVA etc. Never got a second look.

I drove a Porsche without a front plate into the the City's ring of steel during one of the higher alert periods a few years ago, straight past several BiB. I wasn't stopped, and never heard anything either.

I read once that the first thing you should do if stopped for having no plates is to report the crime of stolen plates! The number of plates you see stuck on with bits of tape, it's no surprise that occasionally some fall off, or get pulled off by naughty children.
