Did a search but couldn't find nuffink. (there's a surprise)
Much that would like to do my bit I just cannot justify taking any time off from work. I am a sole trader and take bookings and give quotes by phone and also sort drivers out. My phone is glued to my ear!
It's a new business and if I can't answer the phone I am screwed, don't have anyone else to run it while I'm off (I have nor had a holiday for two years)
Has anyone had any experience in getting an permanant excusal?

I did jury service a few weeks ago. Have a look at this document:

11. Jurors may be excused for valid business reasons. Applications of this type should, however, be looked at closely and granted only if there would be unusual hardship. A small business is an example of a case where such hardship might be suffered, although each case must be considered on its individual merits.
Sounds to me like you qualify. Get in touch with them and see what they say. Even if they won't excuse you at the moment, you might be able to get it deferred.

Been asked to do it twice now. (over a period of several years)
Got away both times as, like yourself, I run my own business and struggle without being able to be in contact.
They wrote back to me quite quickly, telling me that due to the circumstances they'd excuse me this time.
Did the same on the second one and got the same answer back. *This time* seems to be the standard get-out clause as people are chosen at random. (as stated above)
Just send the form back explaining your problem and you should be OK. (Mail strike permitting of course)

I've only been called once, and was excused as I'd served within a Police force within the last "X" years.
I now too run a small business, and although I may find it interesting, I wouldn't have time at the moment either.
Do you really "have" to do it ?, I'd suggest that if someone doesn't want to, and is forced, they wouldn't make a very good juror

If somebody doesn't want to do jury service, then they don't want to, simple as that.
As I've never done this service, who pays you ?, or are you expected to lose money as well ?
I've had my time of following orders, now I'm free, or sort of !

I'm sure you're correct, I've done plenty of "civic duty" in my time, and enjoyed nearly every minute of it.But

To all the nay-sayers;
If it came to your trial, would you not prefer it that the jury that tried you was composed of your peers rather than the chavs who could be bothered to take a few days off collecting benefits to serve on your jury?
If you arent prepared to do jury duty (without good excuse) you don't deserve the right to trial by jury.

If you want to get out of it i'd say best bet is to try now before you attend court because when I went the judge would only excuse people if they had a booked and paid for holiday in the time the trial was expected to last.
Quite a few people tried the "My jobs too important" and "I'm self employed" but the judge was having none of it and to top it all off it lasted 3 months.

I would like to it but I'm not prepared to risk losing contracts or pissing my customers off. it's been two and half years of commitment and I'm not going to be in the best frame of mind while my phone goes unanswered and jobs go elswhere.

iv'e heard a tale that when the usher or whoever it is that swears you in, the first time he speeks to you direct ,reply in a loud voice,can you repeat that please i'm hard of hearing, he tries again and you repead again even louder this time,
