how do I go about finding out about someone's criminal record?

someone I know has been convicted of fraud twice and have paid visits to the big house, but they are now holding an office for which I believe they aren't allowed to due to the nature of their previous criminal convictions

you cant, not even they can.

For "official" use only.

Your best bet is to let their "boss" or whoever is in charge of them know.

failing that, the local press if it'll be a scandal.

If it was reported in the press at the time it shouldn't be too hard for you to find if you know names and dates.

have u googled them if they have been to prison its probably been in the paper - u got something against them as maybe if they have been to prison they are trying to reform now by holding a proper job?

If you go to Companies House Webcheck service you can searched the banned directors list. This might not be exhastive against specific rulings otherwise, though.

So how do companies go about checking someone's background with a job application? Can they not see any criminal history? I always assumed they could.

I'd rather not, it's for a charity so would prefer to get my facts straight and have a word with him rather than kick up a political fuss

With some jobs, there will be a CRB check done on each applicant who's shortlisted to get it.

Otherwise, depending on the seriousness of the criminal punishment (note punishment, rather than offence), convictions must be declared if asked as part of the job application process, until that conviction is classed as 'spent'. If the applicant lies, it's a criminal offence in itself.
