I started a thread in another forum regarding my car which is with the dealers at the moment..

they are saying that the car does not require a replacement tyre ?

I have scoured the internet but it gets sketchy when it comes to the inner tread. The tyre itself passes the MOT as it is more than 1.6mm over 3/4 of the tyre.

I would like a BIB opinion though as I don't really want to get pulled for a defective tyre..

so tell me - would I get pulled ??

whether it's presently legal, I'd get a new one, and get the tracking/pressures etc right

Valid MOT so no worries. MOT inspector is more qualified than your average flat foot TrafPol geezer.

Hugo - tracking has now been sorted at their cost but they are refusing to replace the tyre

but there are people that are saying that the inner tread must be visible and not worn like it is.

Why the BiB. How much do you value your car/life?

If I'm getting this right, the OP intends to replace it - however he believes the dealership should pay for the tire as it's worn badly through a fault of theirs?

The legal requirement is 1.6mm minimum over the central 3/4.

ah right

I'd definitely try to get them to go at least 50%, given that it has worn early (that 1 mm won't last, and the whole tyre will be a bit off balance anyway)

When my tracking was out SEAT steadfastly refused to replace tread-stepped tyres because they were "Legal". Noisy, uncomfortable, but legal.

definately will be replacing it - its who that matters

I had only put on about 670 miles (2 weeks) when that picture was taken but had reported tracking from the start of purchase.

They have now done a full KDS which put right the tracking - but still leaves the tyre as is...

That's illegal. There has to be visible tread all over and there clearly isn't.

Its hard to tell from the pic, but as others have stated it needs to be 1.6mm over the center 3/4 of the tyre tread in a continuous band.

I cant see any cord or ply exposed so seems legal to me. But depends if that section under 1.6mm is within the 3/4 of the tyre which i cant tell from the pic.

The outer edges need not have visable tread.

The Civic Type-R used to wear the insides of the rear tyres excessively. Honda had the rear suspension geometry altered as a service bulletin. When this was done to mine, I was offered two new tyres with a pro rata contribution for wear across the unaffected portion of the tyre. Can't remember what it cost me for two spanking new Bridgestones, but it was very little.

I had a tyre way more worn on the edge than that pass MOT without even a mention. The outer inch on mine was completely smooth.

Trouble is that even now the tracking has been corrected the worn part will still continue to wear, but just not at the accellerated rate that it was wearing before.

So the tyre probably hasn't got long left and as it's coming in to winter it might be as well to change it anyway.

You should change the other on the same axle too so they match in characteristics.
