Do you really mean an additional £2,500?? What are you insuring the QE2?

Shop around, the insurance companies know speeding is no more likely to cause you to have an accident so if they up the premium it is because they can rather than them insuring a bigger risk.

well my 6 points were worth £800 to some companies

I hate to even think what a speeding ban would cost.

ps Just insured my car with liverpool victoria and they said they didnt care about the 6 points!

My three points costs about £30. My IAM Test Pass gets me about £30. Net result - no effect.

I had a 7 day ban for speeding in my reckless youth
The insurance companies go on the code associated, if it's just a SP30 you should be ok. Having a 7 day ban on an SP30 cost me about an extra £100 over a normal SP30 on both the MR2 Turbo and NSX.

Not been banned, but got 6 pts last year, on top of 3 existing (but now expired). I have 3 vehicle insurances, 2 car & 1 bike and although the bike insurer and 1 of the car insurers wanted more, I shopped around & got both for less than the previous year. The other insurer didn't try to charge any more, either before or after I declared the points.

One of them even told me that, due to Scameras/ Speed kills etc that many more people having points has reduced the impact on insurance and that the 'norm' was 3 pts.

Ironic, don't you think, that the governments attempt to make speeding 'socially unacceptable' appears to be having the opposite effect
[/thoughtoftheday]
But, after all that, I don't know what effect a ban has.

Yes, re the above "thought for the day":

the more points and fines that are dished out, the more socially acceptable is "speeding".
