Councillor's writ over 'poor policing'

A council leader in Holyhead is taking legal action against the head of North Wales Police over what he claims is poor policing in the area.

Jeff Evans, deputy mayor of the Anglesey town, said he is suing chief constable Richard Brunstrom, for just over £200 in the small claims court - the amount he has paid for policing in his council tax in the last two years.

But North Wales Police have defended their record saying there are more officers on the beat.

Speaking as a private individual, Councillor Evans made his views known at the meeting in Gwynedd Council chambers on Monday night.

He said he is pursuing two years of police precepts, amounting to £98 and £124, which are added automatically to his council tax bill.

"The police fail to respond to public needs, they failed to respond to telephone calls and people no longer feel safe," he said.

"I want to see improved services which should be maximised for the public and I want to stand and be counted."

In a statement, a force spokesman said: "North Wales Police know nothing about any writ served by Councillor Evans who has seen fit to go to the media immediately.

"On the other hand, North Wales Police will respond to the writ having given its content due proper and serious consideration."
