Finders keepers?

Possibly an FAQ. Today in Marks and Spencer as I walked away from the till I noticed a £10 on the floor (about 15 paces). Part of me said pocket it but as usual my good side won and I handed it to the cashier.
Had I stuck it in my pocket and walked out would I have been guilty of stealing by finding?

You did the right thing, good on you. Had I stuck it in my pocket and walked out would I have been guilty of stealing by finding?
You did the right thing.
The cashier should have a lost and found book behind the till and record it on there, well at least we do at the Coop.
Chances are it will be claimed by the owner soon enough but if not we put any money found like that in one of the charity collection boxes in the store.

If you found it blowing down the street though, it would be a different matter.
Pocketing £10 in those circumstances would not necessarily consitute theft. Small amounts of cash are not included. That is set in case law.
If you tried to make reasonable steps to trace the owner of a £10 note floating down the street, you would have many claimants

Ten quid, in the pocket no worries. But when I found a wallet with £50 in, I searched it for some I.D., finding only a membership to a local gym, called them, told them to contact their member and give them my name and phone number, and tell him I had found his wallet.
Within 30 mins, he turned up at work to pick it up from me. As well as being chuffed at the wallet being returned to him, tried to give me £20 for my troubles, I actually had a hard time convincing him (A Polish lad), that it wasn't necessesary, what I did was what people should do.
Initially my pal suggested I take it to the police, imagine how long that would have taken, paperwork etc, and would they have tracked him down in 30 mins?
But the tenner, I bet no one ever noticed they had dropped it.
Oh go on then, double standards and all that................................
