Lunatic driver. What to do?

There is a small lane near to where I live which is a passing places only single-track road type job. I was on the way home on my bike this evening riding up said lane and caught up a Subaru Tribeca reg HK57 ***. I was riding a normal distance behind when he stopped in the middle of the lane blocking the oncoming traffic (perhaps two cars) and jumps out and comes towards me screaming his head off. He comes closer and starts poking me shouting that I am a "racist 
" that "MI5 are watching me" and that he "knows who I am". He then proceeds to look at the back of my bike and make a note of my regisration plate, and shouting about how he was going to report me to the police for racist abuse. I have summarised for the sake of this description but he accused me of being a "racist " half a dozen times or so.
So I ask of the wisdom of PH what should I do?
1) Get my defence in first and report him to the police?
2) Ignore it? He's clearly a lunatic and it was mistaken identity?
3) Something else?
For the sake of completeness I have never seen this guy, or his car, in my life. He is clearly unbalanced as I can think of no other reason to buy a Subara Tribeca.

Wait until he pokes or threatens you again, then act immediatly and lay him out with one very hard punch to the face.. When the police arrive to wake him up, you simply explain to them that you feared for your safety and took the required action to protect yourself.... The law should be on your side. I for one would not allow anyne to start screaming abuse at me, let alone poke or push me without there being an immediate and affective response...

Told local plod which I think is sensible. I was offered a visit from the local bobby, and offered counselling if necessary. I said I think I will manage to get over the trauma.
On reflcetion, although it doesn't bother me unduly - I was brought up in Newcastle so it's hardly the worst thing that has ever happened - I'm not sure that a little old lady being assaulted on a dark country lane would feel the same way.

Maybe write a note of everything that happened whilst it is still clear in your head.
