From the report
"
Running a red light at more than 15km/h over the speed limit – which now earns a penalty of six demerit points – would attract a penalty of 12 points, which is the maximum allowed before a licence is taken away.
"
Does that mean that if run a red light at less then 15km/h you get less?
Seems very hard one mistake and your out!

If anything they have it worse in Aus. Have you seen Alan Buckingham's work?

Double demerit has been tried before in Australia with no measurable benefit. I'm not surprised because the vast majority of accidents are caused by error not by violation. And even where there is a violation, it isn't usually deliberate.

Australia has also lost the fatal accident rate trend, and government is concerned. There's a committee to discuss it, and I made a written submission. Right this second I'm not sure what their web link is. I'll try to find it later.

What you must remember is that every friday the majority of Aussies hit the pubs immediately after work and cause absolute carnage through drunk driving.
Auckland NZ is just the same, if you've ever driven there late Friday night you'll know.... its ferkin scary,............
and BTW in the USA it's normal to have doubled fines in Roadworks...
IMHO a good idea, whether it works is another question... praps more trafpols?????

Well the worrying point to me is this - I'm out on a Friday night wandering down a road, and bang i'm flashed at 32 in 30 zone. All of a sudden that is 6 points.

Now how the hell is that helping safety?? They were quite proudly saying on their site 732 drivers banned over the Aussie weekend! But how many of them were a safety risk??
Beggars belief....

Paul: Yeah i've seen Alan Buckingham's work - some of his points are good - some not so (I think), i'll post what I think after I 've re-read it - just incase i'm getting the work confused with some other!

I can appreciate there are social differences et al between us and our down under cousins (NZ included).. but this sort of process really makes me worry.. I'm sure Brake's "watcher" of these forums will no doubt be forming a submission to central government to get this in here....
