PCA Invesigate Pedestrian's Death

Man on motorway couldn't be apprehended by Police

The Police Complaints Authority is to supervise the investigation into a fatal road traffic incident on the M6 at Rosehill, near Carlisle, Cumbria on Sunday morning.

At around 08.20 am on Sunday 1st February, two Cumbria Police cars went to Rosehill following a report that a man had been seen on foot at junction 43 on the M6. When the police arrived he was seen walking on the northbound slip road. Police tried to persuade him to leave the road. The man walked onto the northbound carriageway towards Eden Bridge and was struck by two cars shortly afterwards. He received fatal injuries and died at the scene.

The man is from the Carlisle area. His family have been contacted by the police.

Cumbria Police have voluntarily referred the matter to the Police Complaints Authority.

PCA member David Petch, who is supervising the investigation said: "This is a tragic incident and my sympathies go to the man's family and friends. I will oversee the investigation which will be carried out impartially on behalf of the coroner.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to ask anyone who might have seen the incident to contact Cumbria Police on 01768 891999," he said.

I you remember i posted this the other night when i got pulled over by police.

They were to busy pulling me over to attend a stabbing in Rosehill..

IIRC the man who was killed was the knifeman in a stabbing a 2 days before this incident.

Maybe i should send my complaint into the PCA aswell. to support that the police did not attend the 1st incident ontime. and henc ethe man got away. Then he was subsiquently tracked down and chased to the M6

His sympathies should also go out to the drivers who have now got to live the rest of their lives having hit and killed someone who was walking along the motorway!

Absolutely right, Lex.
I bet this incident will be recorded as "caused by speeding" in the statistics though.

imho police try to stop man walking onto the motorway, the man ignors the police, the man carries on walking, the man is subsiquently hit by 2 cars, the man dies through own stupidity.......whats the problem? its mearly darwin helping the rest of humanity evolve by irradication of the weakest.......why the enquiry?....its not as if you can make a statement that will bring the bloke back to life, its a total waste of time and resorces.

The Fact is that this man just did not walk onto the motorway. He was fleeing from the police as 2 nights previously he stabbed a person who lived near the rosehill industrial estate.

Please have a read of this

On that night the police pulled me over but they were on there way to attend the stabbing and try an d find the knifeman. he got away and they found him a few days later. and he RAN onto the Motorway to get away from the police.

steve,we all get pulled for a stop check every now and again, its just a hazzard of the drive.

hindsight is a great thing to have, unfortunatly it is too late to do anything when you have it.if the cops in the car had foreseen the seriousness of the stabbing situation im sure they wouldnt have even bothered with pulling you up....they didnt and thats sad but its something that happens mate.

i was pulled up by essex plod on the a127 for supposedly doing 80 (in a 70) and i believe they would have done me if they hadnt spotted that my wife and son were in the car with me.i wasnt driving irraticly or dangerously,i wasnt tailgating or being a lane-hogging tit yet i was pulled because i was (in their eyes) a young looking bloke in a high-powered red bmw.....no other reason, they just thought they would try it on.

after they checked all my lights, tyres and paperwork and i (as far as i was concerned) had finnished answering their questions and even offering for my car to have its speedo checked for accuracy as long as their car was checked aswell they started getting a bit fresh....my answer to them bringing up the 'were thinking about weather to give you a warning or weather to do you for excess speed i answered "if your going to do me,do me but if your just going to waste my time asking stupid questions and quoting "what if's" about situations involving pedestrians that dont fecking exist then im getting in my car and going home and you can follow behind and we can deal with it there as i want to get my son to bed and quite frankly you are realy beginning to realy f**k me right off!"

the female cop was still nattering as i drove off,i dont know weather she was talking to me or not but they didnt follow me home.

fair enough mate.i doubt if the trafpol have/had anything personal against you,it was a simple stop-check and unfortunatly the knifing incident came up whilst you were being pulled but this would have been dealt with by other officers who werent tied up on other jobs by the time they got there.....hence making their journey a waste of time.

there was no garentee that the cops that pulled you up would have caught the bloke on the night you were pulled anyway.
