'CAMERAS ARE FOR MENACES'

Britain's most senior policeman has strongly criticised the use of speed cameras as money-making devices for regional forces.

The Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir John Stevens says their primary purpose should be to lower the accident rate, not to raise cash.

He said he had insisted all the Met's cameras be deployed in places where there is a history of serious accidents.

This approach had worked in his territory cutting the accident rate by a quarter and reducing road deaths significantly.

He told the Daily Mirror: "I have asked all my traffic chiefs to make sure that cameras are sited - and only sited - at places where there is a standing record of accidents caused by bad driving and where the presence of a camera will have a positive effect in reducing that toll.

"I am not after people on a school run exceeding the limit by five or six miles an hour.

"I want my traffic policing to target the dangerous drivers, the road hogs, and the menaces who are driving unlicensed and uninsured."

Given that most school run trips are done in built up 30 zones surely this is exactly what they should be targetting?

Yup, credability zero with that stupid remark. It seems the whole shooting match is run by idiots, apart from that how the f**k is a camera going to catch 'bad drivers' or 'menaces with no insurance' did he engage his obviously overworked braincell before making that comment?

I like some of what he is saying, but cameras are never going to catch the people he wants to target, more BIB please.

Agreed.

Numpty mum with five quarrelling kids in a people-carrier/4X4, each pushing the picture they painted today in front of her face whilst she drives at 26mph in a 20 limit (30% over the speed limit)!

If 30% over is acceptable in a 20 limit, that means 91mph is acceptable on motorways. How about it Sir John?

PS - saw a comment recently about the difficulty in getting "high quality Chief Constables. Based on pronouncements from Blundersturmfuhrer and Stevens ... it seems that they can only find idiots. Is this what our BiB aspire to (that's a rhetorical question, BTW) - S

Mumpties...tell me about them..yesterday in Bielefeld on a road which has the "green wave" (i.e. all lights are switched so that you can keep to a posted speed and hit them all green at 60kph)
Mumptie in a VW Touran shitbox, comes screaming past me trying to jump the lights, on the phone, 2 kids in the back and it appeared she was also doing here makeup, and the stupid goes flyig across a redlight at 80kph.... after it had changed around 4 seconds before.....
How she wasn't kiled I'll never know... needless to say said mumptie was at the next traffic lights fuming and cursing into her mobile when I pulled up and passed as they changed to green.....
Almost a pity she didn't have an accident as I'd have loved to take her license off her with my report to the BiBs...it's eejits like that who give us all a bad name and then let the Marys of this world spout their emotional guff.......

Big problem Sir John.

Met Traffic Federation say out of the Forces 638 traffic officers only 375 are constables patrolling the streets.Come a footie match and between 30 -40 are used. 125 do nothing but fatal accidents. investigations. Further depleted in supervisory roles (138) and other cultural events.

According to Federation (Paul Monk, Tonyrec) 40% of Met Traffic do not patrol the Streets?????????

Light at the end of the tunnel as 20 are being recruited.

You will be surprised EXACTLY how many Police are out on the streets and in particular, Trafpols.
Certainly not enough in my opinion to get the job done effectively.

Sadly, there are a lot of Trafpols still in offices doing the Admin, Fatacc Investigations etc...some of it very necessary and some of it not. What i mean by that is that, some posts could be managed by civilians.
There is a lot of very valuable experince tucked up in Offices.

The ones that are out on the streets are working extremely hard to combat the flow and at times i believe that we are winning.

The concept of a "supervisory role" being a "cultural event" is rather appealing - Streaky

What he’s saying is that the cameras will work when placed and set correctly. He didn’t say that cameras wouldn’t be placed near schools, all he said was that he wasn’t after the school run doing 36mph. It doesn’t mean that the cameras can’t be set to 40mph/45mph.

His last comment about targeting dangerous drivers refers to getting more Traffic Officers on the streets which is currently happening, although very slowly.

I find it strange that even when an article is produced that is against the very thing you hate you still find a reason to complain. I sometimes wonder if some of you will ever be satisfied.

monster1, we've cause to be cynical. The spin, deceit and lies spouted in the name of road safety is not imaginary, and can you honestly see 30mph limits being raised to 40/45mph?!
