The ones that have the motorway patrol cars and look a bit like police cars? Anyone else heard they're being disbanded?

Just the opposite; I have heard there are a load of offences and powers queuing up to be handed over to their increasing responsibility and numbers.

there are a few, but the man on the ground would be the last to know if they are about to be sacked

That is correct; ShropshireMike is bound to be the first to know.

I heard that they were having a huge recruitment drive this year and I know they are building new outstations in some areas.

This is closer to the truth of the matter as I understand it.

I doubt that very much after the amount that's been spent establishing them over the last few years

As has already been said, we've just took a load of new people on, we have a station renewal program going on and we've just signed a new 5 year fleet plan with a new vehicle provider, so I don't think we're going anywhere just yet. wink

I see their use with people breaking down (lone women etc) and accidents. Id vote for them to stay.

yes I've seen their use where they are not allowed to help you change the wheel, not allowed to offer you to sit in their truck etc. Personally I am all for more visible policing on the road but not for some civil service men to shift priorty to say looking after speeding fines etc.

I think the HATO's are actually a great thing I just fear they will end up being fine enforcers

Compensation culture put pay to wheel changing and to the sitting in vehicles.

which is a joke isnt it. I know its not the lads fault its HSE and insurance lawyers. Really boils my piss. Someone in power needs to turn around and say eff off to the vultures, get rid of no win no fee and pass law that probits sueing services unless its a case of very obvious neglect.

I've changed wheels.....I mean I've helped talk people through a wheel change whistle . There's nothing worse than seeing a lone woman with a load of kids in the car without the first clue in how to change a wheel. I always say whatever you do, do NOT write into the HA thanking me for changing your wheel, you done it all by yourself!! yesyesyes
