Check this out! Not available for the Sony Ericsson P800/900 yet but shouldn't be long now.

This would be my ideal solution. No wires - no extra screens. Just my phone, a £150 Bluetooth GPS receiever and a £60 subscribtion to Trafcam!

Is anyone using this?

Features:

Allows you to set a speed warning just by tapping the screen
Gives time (secs) and distance countdown
Calculates accurate speed
Gives road name
Directional indicator
Camera type indicator (truvelo, gatso, mobile etc)

In other words it does everything that the Blue 2 does but cheaper and with a colour touch screen!

I doubt if the database is as good as a Road Angel or Origin B2 .... etc.

Also there is no option to attach laser detectors or jammers.

Sixty pounds a year sounds a bit expensive, when I can renew my Road Angel for £99-00 for a lifetime of updates.

im glad i didnt spend a few months developing this myself. I had the idea about a year ago when the p800 was just coming out. Thats the problem with the software engineering industry theres no room for one man bands because someone else will develop it faster.

I've no idea about the quality of the dBase. I guess I'll give it a go when it comes out and let you all know. I like the touch screen function and the ability to be able to submit new sites to the dBase directly from your car.

£60 a year sounds about right when you consider that this is all you pay. There's no seperate charge for the software.

For me this is great because you can swap between cars without any need for wires and there's nbo need to buy ....yet another gadget to clutter the dashboard. Why not leverage what I have (colour screen, bluetooth, GPRS connection) and do it all in software. The GPS Reciever is a worthwhile purchase as it will work with pretty much any bluetooth enabled PDA/Phone, meaning that I can use it for Navigation with this phone, or any other phone I buy in the future.

This will look very cool indeed in my phone cradle on the dashboard. Apparently you can also customise the sound alerts with MP3, WAV and midi files. I think mine will be the sound of a cash register opening:-)

LOL - I now have the wavfile on the phone and am imagining it every time I go past the truvelo on the A21. That's worth £60 of my money.

The link to the wav is here:

I think quite a few of us techy types had that idea.

I have an idea which is slightly more cunning, but needs a couple more years development in mobile telecomms before it's possible.

Guess what I do for a living.

I forgot to mention - I take your point on jammer's, detectors - but TBH I'm not really looking for either. Jammers are illegal. Detectors are more trouble than they are worth and are pretty ineffective for laser. By the time you get to find out about a trap you've already got an NIP on it's way to you

not so sure a jammer is illegal - there's no specific law that applies - or perhaps flashlights have become illegal

Anyway my IR units open the electronics gates to the Estate !!

Yes of course - I should have said that operational units that are specifically designed for the purpose of impeding a police officer in his duty are not legal. High powered laser garage door openers that happen to go on accidentally for 5 second bursts, and units that are switched off and hidden behind the grille for the purpose of engine bay aesthetics are all...perfectly legal.

Yes - you need to visit www.traffcam.com/

I just got an e-mail back from one of the developerwho tells us that the P800/900 version should be a very easy adaptation but that in order to make it work he needs a phone to test it on...which they've not got round to yet.

I've offered him the loan of my own in return from a free copy of the software. We'll see what they have to say.

I bought a Road Angel about a year ago and have been very pleased with it...a few months later I then bought an iPaq (2210) to run TomTom Sat Nav (convenience of being able to move from car to car), as well as using as a good excuse to upgrade my PDA.

At the same time, I learnt about TrafCam for PocketPC, that integrates with TomTom...PERFECT!!...less clutter on the dashboard, means I can sell on my Road Angel to a mate...hmmm...not quite.

As stated above, the dB isn't as good as Road Angels, nor does it recognise which direction you are headed on a road, (which RA does)...this is very annoying after a while. Also, when coming off a motorway (say the M3 junction of the M25 going anti-clockwise), you get warned about cameras that are on the fly-over parts!!

I also struggled to customise the warning alerts...from memory, fixed installs change ok, but the s/w doesn't seem to accept changes for the other types of alert...weird.

I haven't tried TrafCam on its own, ie., independently of TomTom, nor the mobile phone version, so can't comment on that, but it doesn't integrate *that well* with TomTom...however, bearing in mind this is MicroShaft underneath, this is prob fair-cop!

If I hadn't have used Road Angel beforehand, I'd prob be pretty pleased with its performance, but....this is potentially license saving stuff (another can of worms!), so have reverted back to Road Angel, not as pretty, but more effective. I did, however, like the feature in TrafCam that alerts you of known Police dug-outs/zapping positions...can get wearsome on a motorway, but did give me a heads-up on the M3 where I could've been "done" by the patrol car sitting there!

Just my (very) humble opinion of TrafCam on a PDA, hope this is helpful to somebody...
