Got this story passed on to me from cousins! Apparently as reported in "Mail on Sunday" by Martin Delgado:

SPEED CAMERA ARMY IN CIVVIES

Police warn: "We'll have to issue hundreds more £60 tickets to pay for our new recruits!"

"Police are hiring an army of civilian "speed busters" so that they can lay more traps for unsuspecting motorists.

"But the recruits will have to catch enough drivers to cover their salaries.

"The rules require all camera costs to be met by the revenue from the fines which means the newcomers could lose their jobs if they do not meet prosecution targets.

"There are now so many electronic speed traps that the police cannot cope on their own. So they have started looking for civilians to operated the devices, draw up statements and give evidence in court against motorists!

"Wiltshire police are advertising for "technically minded" people with CLEAN driving licences because they do not have enough police officers to operate their 12 fixed and 4 mobile scams.

"But the force must rake in an extra £75k per year to cover the civilian's salaries - which means an extra £1250 tickets @£60 fine will have to be issued to speeding motorists.

"Wearing special uniforms and working shifts 6am to 12am including 60 weekends per year the new Safety Camera Enforcement Units will patrol the county in vans and on motorbikes, operating laser-type speed cameras and collecting gatso films, as wellas recommending new sites for MORE scams!

"Starting salary is £15591, rising to £16407 pa, plus a shift premium of 12%.

"Successful candidates will be required to give evidence in court against the motorist who pleads "NOT GUILTY!", and the job description warns:

"Some knowledge of dealing with the public in confrontational situations would be an advantage"

"As on occasions the post holder may be approached and have to deal with an enraged driver in a professional manner!" ( only typing what it says )

"The speed camera unit, run by a Chief supintendent, has 30 staff at present. Last year Wiltshire police spent £973,993 on speed cameras, and raked in £1,31580 in fines. The £336,587 surplus over expenditure went to the Treasury!

"About 50,000 motorists have been copped by mobile scammers in Wiltshire, but they will not reveal the number caught by fixed scams.

"Wiltshire & Swindon Road Safety Partnership spokesperson (Saira Khan) says: "When we take police officers away to work in the camera unit, their jobs have to be filled. At present there is not that capacity which is why we are looking for new people!"

"The ordinary non-offending taxpayer is not paying for this. The funding comes from those who choose to exceed the speed limit and break the law!"

Tell me this is a wind up and that the Mail on Sunday is "avin' a larf"

But - looking at the bright side for a mo ---

WHERE will they find those with a CLEAN licence!
And be willing to get a black eye!!

(Apart from our good selves, and the other scam ranters on here! - And we are not likely to apply for the job!)

You cannot make it up!

Huh? 60 weekends per year? One between each of the 52 weeks and a few extra is that then?

There have been discussions elsewhere that it is not legal to use civilians to operate speed traps.

Something to do with their not being capable of "forming a prior opinion that the vehicle was speeding" before operating the equipment, as per the ACPO guidelines

Er, so what happened to the guidelines for siting cameras? Probably what happened when someone complained about a speed camera at the end of their garden, so the council relocated it.

This is fing ridiculous! Another example of B'liarite Britain ... ignore the will of the country and do what the h3ll you like.

Pah!

The number of unregistered cars or cars with false registration plates will rocket . . . which will cause a far bigger problem than speed limits that are too low.

Now thats interesting if you have points they don't want you, what happens if you get points whilst employed? Could this be a case for unfair dismissal.
Would the same conditions extend to the police, I wonder how many police have points?

N.B. I don't personally think having points should preclude them from this job.

A "clean" driving licence is merely one that is not dirty. Just wash it before the interview (the paper ones might need dry-cleaning) - Streaky

Why do they need to generate more cash, Just remove an extra 75k from the surplus, I am sure Gorden Brown wouldn't mind. After all it's about safety and not making cash .Atb Derek

If they were part time (just at weekends) positions id go for the job myself. I would, however, erect a MAHOOSIVE 'Speed Camera Ahead!' sign a few hundred yards before the camera van!

Just reported what the journalist actually wrote!! Did say thought they were "avin' a bit of a larf!" as it seemed surreal!

"Like" the bit about in the ad (per rodney59) about being conversant with photography and computer skills. Does that mean ability to manipulate photos? After all, there appears to be evidence of traffic wardens doing so!

And from all the posts here, there and everywhere, it seems there are difficulties in obtaining this evidence!

Civvies? Well - these before these civvies (if at all eligible) apply, they should think about what the French did to collaborateurs after the war! (Not to mention the shunning that ex-Stasis and similar insects get in Eastern Germany!) Come the revolution!! (Will there be blood? )

You're joking right?

Cameras are so profitable you could take over the country if you got a franchise!

Why do you think they put so many on the (safest) but highest speed roads in the country i.e. motorways!
