A STUDENT is suing cops who saved his life by helping to lift an 18-ton truck off him — claiming they were to blame for the accident.
Matthew Halstead, 23, had downed three cans of lager when he squirted water at a cop during a boozy Rag Week parade.
He leapt on to a float but the officer ordered him off. As he got down Mr Halstead fell under the back wheels of the truck carrying the float, Bristol County Court heard.
Police screamed for the driver to stop and other students helped officers take the weight of the vehicle until firefighters arrived.
But Mr Halstead who has a permanent limp after breaking his leg and pelvis, is suing Gloucestershire Constabulary for negligence. He says police failed in their “duty of care” to prevent the accident.
Mr Halstead, of Nelson, Lancs, had joined more than 100 students from Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education for the 1999 parade.
He squirted the officer “in jest” and didn’t mention it in his initial statement because he didn’t want to upset his parents, the court heard.
A student fell off a float the previous year and Mr Halstead’s lawyer, Gerwyn Samuel, said police were negligent in their security.
The hearing continues.

Frankly I think he should be jailed for taking this to court, but he'll probably win
