Right, on 31/10/03 I surrendered the tax on my mgb as the weather was getting rubbish and at the same time I taxed my sierra (I know, I know...hangs head in shame)when the refund of the tax arrvied I paid it in at the bank, there was no sorn form for me to fill in.

A couple of weeks ago I got the 25 quid fine letter, so I wrote back and said "but you never sent me a form" and the subtlety is that (assuming innocent till proven guilty) that I had by implication stated that I was not going to use the car on the public highway as I had surrendered the tax as opposed to letting it lapse.

When I wrote back I also sent a SORN to Swansea as there was one enclosed, I back dated it to 1/11/03.

I have received two letters today, one is from Glasgow and says that having reconsidered the case that the fine still stands and the other says that my car is recorded as having been sorn'd on 1/11/03 so I should be in the clear?

I am going to write back sending a photocopy of the letter saying its recorded as sorn'd to the Glasgow office and tell them to get their house in order.

what do we think?

If needs be I'll have my day in court.

And still not bloody pay as I have done nothing wrong.

They can bolt me up and I'll not pay.

Imagine automatically fining people if they didn't pay their TV licence on time? Or if they got rid of their TV and didn't notify the authorities? Or are these next on the list of stealth taxes?

well my brother-in-law just got a dvla sorn notice saying his cars sorn decleration runs out at the end of the month.....he never put it on sorn in the first place and the car has been taxed twice in the last year....to make matters worse,he sold the escort 8 weeks ago and sent the logbook off registered delivery the following day, which was confermed as delivered the next day on the royal mail website!

he's absolutely fumeing......the new owner of the car isnt too happy either as he should have been the one notified as he recieved the new log book about a week ago!.....the new owner is putting the car down as sorn for the next 6 months anyway whilst its being done up but after this news he didnt seem too confident in the dvla!!

oh,and the tax disk he sold the car with doesnt run out till the end of the month!!

Not if you don't keep it on the public road

I've received a SORN £25 fine for a Sierra of mine (being stripped as a donor for a kit)

The thing is, I've sent 2 SORN Forms so far...

I filed one when I got the car and heard nothing back, phoned up the DVLA and asked what had happened..

"Oh no sir, that car is registered as untaxed without SORN"

So I sent off another form, and still haven't heard anything until I receive the fine in the post. There is however a box on the back of the form where you can enter "I Delared SORN on this vehicle at __/__/__"

So I fully intend to fill in that box and post it back, not a word of a lie, unfortunatly I didn't do the recorded delivery thing and have no evidence

Why would you need evidence? The partnerships don't need to use recorded delivery for speeding NIPs, so why would the DVLA demand it from you for a SORN doc? I'm sure you're not suggesting that double standards might be applied?

Oh no.... of course they wouldn't employ double standards just to get my £25 out of me
