Sending him to jail is nuts. Give him a slap on the wrist and let him go, anyone know the road, sound like a NSL down to a 40 (Thorns Road, Quarry Bank, Dudley, West Midlands).

The magistrate should be birched prior to the next foorball match at Aston Villa so everyone one can cheer. Some of our judiciary need dealing with this is completely out of order.

naah, that was pretty stupid! Its a build up area, running past a popular park ( covered by trees, so you dont see people pop out from it) several industrial units with large trucks pulling out in front of you, needing the entire width to manover

passed a school, through a pedestrian crossing, its also very narrow, with cars often parked on the side of the pavement, and several opportunities for cars to cross the dual carriageway from the other side.

I do the road several times a day, been down it rather fast myself, but over 70mph is just taking the piss.

The stupid thing is, if someone had run out in front of his car at that speed and he'd killed that person, the driver would have probably ended up with a fine of £150 and a month ban.

What a topsy turvey judicial system we have.

Anyway, I do have to say that 114mph is a bit over the top but he did need a BIG slap on the wrist, just maybe not jail.

I know the road well, it's a dual carriage way littered with houses (driveway's onto to road), parked cars (which make it a single carriageway) a primary school, a park opposite the school, various junctions, shops, and business's. The road has always been a 40 and is to fast at that. There have been lots of accidents and a few deaths along that stretch.

The area also has a large problem with the 'lax power' cruise boy racer club, with some nights turning the area into a race track.....this young driver had ''borrowed'' his dads car....the same night that the cruise gathers.

Make an example of him and perhaps some of the other idiots may get the message, perhaps jail wasn't the best method. It would have been better to have him attend RTA's and scrap the bits of kids up for a while.

I wonder if he was stopped at the time? If not, he needs a new lawyer.
Although, some of the other cruisers could have grased him up, I suppose.

Agree with the earlier comments that this is definitely a road with more potential hazards than most numpties recognise, especially the lax power nobs as mentioned.

On the previous court hearing the next person up before the beak was the lad's father charged with obstructing the course of justice in connection with his son's offence. That tells me a lot.

Looking at his photo hope he has soap on a rope!

On the other hand, the criminal justice system [1] has a lot to answer for. He could have gone out committing house garage and shed breaks, asked for umpteen cases to be taken into consideration and got off with a smacked wrist and a holiday to compensate for his "deprived" background.

[1] I deliberately exclude traffic plod from that comment as in this case they were doing their job. ie removing from the roads active contenders for the 2003 Driving Like a Total Nob award

I wonder what the father did. Did he just refuse to supply (S172)?
I guess he doesn't need a new lawyer then, they must have got the driver id. from someone; probably blackmailed the father into it.

I'm as much against these scams as the next bloke but not sure I can see the problem here. Fair enough if it's a tree lined dual carriageway miles from any residential areas but when it comes to the possibility of people crossing roads and kids playing in a park/walking to school and the like, then he deserves everything he gets...116mph in a 40 ffs! You wouldn't even see him coming as you stepped/reversed out...

Not saying it was right to do 116mph in a 40, But if he had been doing 80mph (i think one other was doing 96mph) it would have been just as dangerous but he would probably just got a fine and ban. I think jail is a bit harsh, surely a long ban, and retest would have a better effect?

People doing those speeds past a school deserve all they get...no, they deserve more!

Tough one this. I'm certainly not condining his actions but if this is a first offence and no one was affected by his speeding, then surely a long ban and re-test is the appropriate punishment not a custodial sentence.

It's the persistent no license/no tax/no insurance dodgers who should be locked up!

good points.
I would assume that he would be the sort of person (the thursday night lax boys) that owning a licence isn't a factor. If you can't tell 116mph in a town is a bad idea, a short sharp shock treament may well have a good effect.

I don't know the road in question; maybe the 40mph limit is about right for when it's busy during the day.

The point I would like to make though concerns limits generally; don't assume that just because someone is "n" mph over a limit they are taking the p155. It may be a limit that used to be, for example, a perfectly acceptable NSL.

I agree that it was a moronic thing to do, but prison can not be justified when compared against other crimes. As has been said, people get less for theft and GBH than that. Have it one way or the other, either lock them all up or let them all go, but get the balance right.

The question is , would you like to live on this road
with nobs doing 90-100-110 mph down it while you try to get out of your drive way

Scape Goat ! Interesting he's not Black or asian ?

This is not a racist comment, but if you are going to look for a scape goat in the west midlands and NOT cause an out cry, it might be more convient if they are white, and middle class (dads car makes me assume that if they can afford to insure an 18 year old on a VR6 then they are not exactly residing in a council flat in Tipton)

Poor lad, I say. There but for the Grace of God go I (about 19 years ago). I bet there ain't one person that posts on here that can't honestly look back to thier youth and say they are perfect.
