Just this Thursday had a rude introduction to the world of the CPS and the magistrates.

Was lying in bed at about 12:30 am and my girlfriend heard some noises outside. I was dozing so didn't hear anything, but she woke me up and said she'd seen someone lifting stuff from cars outside neighbouring houses. We went outside (dressed only in my jimjams hehe and bare feet) and had a look around and spotted two "youths" loitering around some cars further down the street. I saw one of them check a door on a car and then move on so I started walking towards them - no idea what I was going to do, but hey it was worth a look, even if I just scared them off.

They walked away and looked back towards me a couple of times and when they got to a corner, I saw them start to leg it, so I gave chase. Got to the corner and saw them running down an alley and kept after them and to my surprise (45 and unfit) I caught one of them within about 75 yards and him with a 40 yard headstart. After a bit of a struggle where I got a fat lip and some bites, bruised ribs and some scratches, I got him to the ground and basically lay on top of him and waited for the police, who my girlfriend had called while I was wrassling. He stunk of beer and put up a fight (he was pretty strong!), and a couple of minutes more he'd've got away, as I was completely done in but plod turned up within a couple of minutes, slapped the handcuffs on him and off to the nick he went.

It took another 5 hours to give the statements, and turns out he's a known local small time crim. I was totally pooped but pleased I'd done my bit.

Had a visit from CID later that morning, and was told that he was already out on bail for similar offences and was suspected of a mini crime wave in the area, mostly opportunistic theft from cars, most likely to feed his drug habit. On that basis he'd be kept in remand, charged and off to jail - do not pass Go, do not collect £200.

Then I got a phone call this morning: he'd pleaded guilty to 11 counts of theft, drug offences and the assault on me (I didn't hurt him at all, apart from his dignity ) and he was RELEASED ON BAIL!

I mean, what is the fking point? He had already broken the terms of his last bail, and they let him out again? How fking stoopid is that? Why did I bother - he could've pulled a knife or put me in hospital, and all so they can let him go again. fking furious.

Welcome to Browns Britain. Sue, I hope you know what you've done, you . hehe

Good on you for stopping it.. Not sure what I'd do, kids aren't kids anymore.. I wouldn't have carried a knife when I was a kid, kids will do these days frown

Bail is ridiculous.. See it on the Traffic Police programs all the time..

'The Romanian was released on bail.. He's still missing'

Bravo squire. If more people took this kind of responsibility then we wouldn't be in the st we we are in. Have a virtual pint beer. If we ever meet I shall buy you a real one.

Well done.

Nice one for doing something, most people wouldn't have bothered.

I always get annoyed at the end of the Police, Camera Action shows when they read out what happened, especially when most of them are '...they failed to turn up in court'.

I feel sorry for the police, must be very disheartening.

Remands in custody are more difficult to get these days due to the burgeoning prison population. To be honest if I've got them into Court with a decent remand application and fought as hard as I can at the hearing then that's good enough.

Unfortunately in this case I imagine they haven't remanded in custody as he is unlikely to receive a custodial sentence of any length. Grr

You are a hero, mate bow

Don't think I would have done what you did, but definitely would have wanted to...

I also feel sorry for the police (not the scamera ones - obviously wink ) as I had a much less serious similar case years ago: Had a mobile phone stolen from a parked car... long story short... phone invoice arrived showing two numbers called after it was stolen - BINGO! Phoned the police, all excited, like, but apparently, all they are allowed to do is phone the number and ask "does anyone know anything about a stolen phone?"... FFS, what's the point? Like they were going to say "you got me banged to rights, Guv'nor, I dun it, take me down" mad

When I was a kid, and a boy scout, a large knife was part of the kit so it went everywhere. Didn't seem odd or threatening then.

Good effort. The more people prepared to take a stand, the better. All too often we abidcate any responsibility for getting stuck in ourselves and instead say it's the Police's problem, or Social Services' problem, we'll get arrested if we intervene, etc, etc. There is no substitute for the scrotes learning that the public will individually not put up with this bullst. To paraphrase one glorious Glaswegian luggage handler from a few years ago, they should know that if they come around here and behave like that, they'll get a battering.
