Mobile phone usage when driving - small rant.

t stopped on side of road in his bloody great Range Rover this morning.
To talk on his mobile phone.
This road being a 'B' road, meaning all traffic behind him had to wait for oncoming traffic.
Why do some people think it makes it legal just by stopping - it's still illegal unless you're sat in the passenger seat with no keys in ignition... <SIGH>
Less than 20 years ago, we used to manage to get from 'A' to 'B' without needing to communicate via telephone - why should it be so different now?

Totally agree. I think people like to appear important. I just ignore the phone in the car until I get to my destination (beside I couldn't hear with the top down f

). Glad it has become illegal and just wished it had more effect.HellDiver said:
Chances are the RR has BT. Just the fricking mouth breather in the drivers seat can't figure out how to pair his/her phone.
That's the one that amazes me. Time and time again, I see drivers of expensive BMW, Merc, RR, LR etc etc cars that are on the phone while they are driving (holding it). Which begs the question - did they not realise what the 'Bluetooth Handsfree' option / standard feature was for? You spank quite a lot of money on a car yet fail to understand the basics about how to drive it legally...?Dont get it.
Though I also understand that some phones dont quite work with some Bluetooth systems, so its not a simple thing to do sometimes. That said, if someone is able to spend 35k+ on a car, the phone they use should be the last of their worries. I even heard someone in a 6 month old Merc E-Class try the excuse of 'I cant afford a handsfree system' when stopped by a Policeman at the side of the road once..... in a car that cost more than the PC earns in a year.... gotta come up with a better excuse than that one next time!

I've also lost count of the amount of times I have seen people obviously texting whilst driving.
Either that, or their speedometer etc. is down at their feet!
I find it quite disturbing when I see somebody behind me in traffic, looking at their pedals (aka texting).
Really, really pisses me off does that.

It's a very big problem in Essex, and especially in Epping.
The road near me is absolutely rife with it. If I stand on the road I will see one every 2-5 minutes with a phone in use.
Culprits are yummy mummies in 4x4's, any expensive or new car and those pikey-tastic Navara type pickup drivers. Basically anyone who is "special."
The police won't do anything as it's too much bother, Crimestoppers won't do anything as it's a motoring matter, so except when officers actually do anything about it like set up a specific trap, it's effectively not illegal and that's the rub here.
They can get away with it, and so they do it. They're chancers and are the same scum in the disabled spots, parent spots, yellow lines, speeding, mimsing and not wearing seat belts.
The motivation is whether they'll get done and what's important to themselves being the centre of their universe, not what is safe or otherwise because they're "better/more skilful" than that.

This could have also been a "seen someone on the phone whilst driving thread", surely it is safer for everyone that he stopped ? Perhaps a "someone parking inconsiderately (to use the phone)" thread would have been more appropriate.

t stopped on side of road in his bloody great Range Rover this morning. To talk on his mobile phone.I have Bluetooth, and on the (very, very) rare occasion I have used it, I found it extremely distracting.
It's for this reason that it is now disabled, and if my phone rings it is ignored.
The problem as I see it is - those of us that really care about how we drive will be distracted by it - those who just use the car as a tool to get from 'a' to 'b' and don't really care about their driving will not be distracted.
Because they don't care.

This rant wouldn't have happenned if the RR driver hadn't tried to do 'the right thing'. If he had taken the call and carried on driving the op would have been none the wiser.
To be honest though, why not simply answer the phone, say that you cannot talk at the moment because you are driving and that you will phone back in a few minutes. Then find a safe place to park and make the call there. Better for everyone and its all fine. Logic? Nah, that would be too easy.Could he have broken down..? Complete electrical failure, no hazzrd lights? Or just broken down and the twonk doesn't know where the button is?
If you are going to bother stopping to make or take a call, usually you'd stop somewherew proper, so the fact he was just stopped pretty much in the middle of the road, maybe due to him being forced to stop?
I'd always check if they needed some help (particularly if it was a fit bird!).

(he was sat with foot on the brake, and left indicator flashing...) - I wouldn't call that parked...
You sound like you'd have preferred him to turn the engine off, put the handbrake on, get out and go round to the passenger side to take the call?!Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
