Hi,

Those nice chaps in the vans that perch on the bridges over the motorway(in my case the M4)...

Does anyone know what speed they will get you on? I understand it to be circa 85mph before they 'bother' - anyone know differently?

If i happened to be doing 92mph, should one expect a ticket (within 3 weeks right?)?

Also, anyone know whether their 'great' equipment covers all 3 lanes at the same time, or do they just focus on the 'fast' lane?

Thanks, Lord.

It'll be interesting to use you as a guide I reckon.

As its so easy to issue speeding tickets now I'd be a little concerned if I was you.

I thought that they had to send the letter within 14 days of the offense not 21.

At 92 you'll get done. Ticket has to be "served" in 14 days of offence.

In general 85 or less you will be fine.

General rule of thumb is 10% + 2mph, so 79mph. Now as most speedos will over read by about 5 or 6 mph you could conceivably get away with 85mph indicated on your speedo. I certainly wouldn't recommend testing this though but at 80mph indicated I think you'd be very unlucky to get done.

You are right in the grey area there.

Other traffic around you on alone on the road ?

Were they going faster ?

Indicated 92 or real 92 ?

Dirty numberplate or clean ?

Bad weather or dry bright and sunny ?

Don't worry about the points - assuming you go from 0 to 3 points
most insurance companies don't bother about it, since millions
of drivers now have points.

Of course, you can't measure safe driving in miles per hour.

I'll update you all in 3 weeks time then!

The motorway was M4 Wiltshire area, during the early afternoon. Not too busy.
Anyone know if the camera is fixed on the 'fast lane'?

I always thought you could do 99mph and you would not lose your license. Go over 100mph and its court time pleading that you need the car for your career etc...may be wrong.

Chill yer beans.
I got points for 94 even though there were others doing more than me.
I unfortunately had the noticable TVR car, although the officer did tell me that he could not fault my driving skills.
3 points and a 60 fine.
took it with grace. couldve got into much more trouble.;)

I've heard this a few time before too.

I can understand why manufacturers would set their speedos slightly slow, but has anyone tested it against GPS speedos?

I got the choice of a speed awareness course or 3 points for 79mph on the M180

Isn't it an EU law or something that all cars have to indicate a slightly higher (3% or so) speed than they are actually doing to allow for differences in tyres etc.? or is that cobblers?
It can't be hard to make a speedo pretty much nail on, my Mustang shows dead on 30 in a 30 and 69 on a GPS with an indicated 70mph, if the yanks can get that close I dare say everyone else can!

And Yes at 92 (if that was your true speed) you are likely to get a ticket unfortunately.

I live in Swindon and know the M4 sites you mention. I recently had the opportunity to speak to these camera operators, I asked the exact same question as you. Anything above a true 90 mph (depending on conditions) and you'll be ticketed. So as most speedos read around 5 mph high, 95 on your speedo you'll be done. In your case it's a close call, you'll have to wait and see.

Speedos are required to read -0 to +10% acuracy. Ie they must not under read. At least, that was the requirement when I SVA'd the Westfield.

I got 'done' by a scamera van on motorway at the very unsafe and clearly lethal speed of 86mph.

I can confirm a Ford Focus has about a 2-3 MPH difference at town speed, but about 6 ot 7 difference at M'Way speed. No idea how. Dodgy Speedo probably biggrin
