Sounds like a stupid answer but it depends on what you want them for..what stage of training etc.
If youre already at Training school then the books given will be a good standard and thats exactly what you will be tested on.

One book thats not too heavy and what a lot of people tend to buy is the 'Beat Officers Companion'.

Full of basic stuff that you would want to know and all for about £10-12 ish.

They do a similar one for Traffic Officers too.

The one that i use (and most other people by the sound of it) is 'Hughes Guide to Policing'.
Its about £16 and you pay about £8 a year to keep it fully updated. The updates are sent out to you.

In fact, thinking about it, i would recommend this one 100%.

Their Phone number is 01908-639233.

Hope that this all helps.

Thanks for the reply Tony,

I about to start my inital training centre course for WM Police and thought it would be good to get a head start with the appropriate book.

Thanks

If you really want your brain leaking out of your ears buy the blackstone manuals.
For sale in all good bookshops.
These are the studying books for promotion exams.

I have the Blackstones Books (there are 4)and they cover different secions... General Police Duties, Crime, Traffic and evidence and procedure. They also do the corresponding Q and A series. Blackstones are good but to make sense of it all you need all four as they refer to each other.
One that i have herd is good but dont have myself is the Police Training Manual 10th Edition is the latest and a really big book.
